‘Back to the Future’ Co-Creator Says ‘F— You’ to People Constantly Asking About a Fourth Movie

Bob Gale, alongside co-creator Robert Zemeckis, penned and produced the “Back to the Future” trilogy, but he’s not keen on resurrecting the time travel series for a potential fourth installment. During his acceptance speech at the Saturn Awards (as reported by Yahoo Entertainment), Gale was queried about the possibility of “Back to the Future 4”.

People often ask, ‘When can we expect ‘Back to the Future 4′?’ In response, Gale stated, acknowledging that the franchise already has a Broadway musical set to tour globally and plans for a stage production on Royal Caribbean Cruises. Essentially, he implied, ‘Back to the Future’ is a part of my life that will continue indefinitely.”

Or simply:

“People wonder about ‘Back to the Future 4’, but Gale pointed out that the franchise already has a Broadway musical touring worldwide and plans for a stage production on Royal Caribbean Cruises, implying it’s a big part of his future.

Even though Gale isn’t excited about “Back to the Future 4,” he shared that he’s assisting franchise mainstay Michael J. Fox with writing a book about his journey making the trilogy. The book, titled “Future Boy,” has yet to reveal further details. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the initial “Back to the Future” movie, and the third and concluding film was released in 1990.

In the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast last autumn, franchise director Robert Zemeckis was queried about Universal Pictures frequently requesting him to produce “Back to the Future 4”. He playfully responded that the studio enquires about it “every couple years”, but this was merely an exaggeration. In reality, they inquire more often, roughly every six months.

The Musical’ instead. He thinks it would be fantastic, but Universal doesn’t seem to understand his idea, so there’s no progress.

In August 2023, ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ made its Broadway debut following a successful run in London’s West End. In 2022, it was honored with the Laurence Olivier Award for best new musical. After more than 500 performances and approximately $80 million in ticket sales, according to producers, the show concluded its Broadway run in January.

Regarding “Back to the Future 4,” Michael J. Fox stated in 2023 that neither a sequel nor a remake is necessary, though he jokingly commented, “Feel free to proceed. It’s your project. I’ve already been compensated.

Fox stated, ‘It’s not necessary,’ he said, referring to Zemeckis’ approach. ‘I believe he’s been quite astute in handling that aspect. I highly doubt there’s a need for a remake or reboot, as I don’t see how it would enhance or clarify the story.’

Christopher Lloyd, who played the role of the eccentric scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown alongside the fox (presumably referencing a character or project), has expressed interest in a potential “Back to the Future 4”. He once mentioned, “I would be thrilled to take part in a sequel, but it seems that Bob Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg believe they’ve concluded the story in the original trilogy. If someone comes up with an exceptional idea for a fourth movie, it might become a reality.
