60 Minutes, an interview program by CBS News featuring former U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, has released all related materials following a lawsuit worth $10 billion from President Donald Trump and FCC investigation. In a statement on Wednesday, CBS News declared that the materials confirm their previous claims that “in line with 60 Minutes’ continuous promises to the public – the 60 Minutes broadcast was not manipulated or deceptive.
In November, a lawsuit was lodged in the Northern District of Texas’ federal court, claiming that “60 Minutes” deceived voters by broadcasting two distinct versions of comments made by Kamala Harris (then running against Trump for the presidency) during an interview. Following this, CBS filed a request to dismiss the case.
At 4:55 PM on Monday, CBS News handed over an uncensored transcript of the Harris interview to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in response to their request for information. Now, one of the Democratic commissioners at the FCC, Anna Gomez, has spoken out, claiming that this inquiry is part of a troubling trend of aligning with the Administration’s wishes on matters outside of our usual duties. This behavior disregards traditional practices and overlooks the authority given by Congress to the FCC to function as an independent body.
The focus is on a segment from an interview that aired during “Face The Nation” to tease a future episode of “60 Minutes,” which took place prior to the 2024 presidential election. In the “Nation” broadcast, Harris’ response was given in its entirety, while it was abridged for the actual interview to enable her to address a broader range of topics.
In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, this statement is like comparing two different scenes from the same interview with Kamala Harris, which was conducted by 60 Minutes. One scene, presented on Face the Nation, showcases a more extensive portion of her response to a question about whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is heeding the guidance of the Biden-Harris Administration. The other scene, displayed on 60 Minutes the following day, offers a shorter excerpt from the same answer. Both scenes accurately represent Harris’s responses, as evidenced by the full transcript and the tough questions posed by 60 Minutes, which speak for themselves.
The situation involving the lawsuit and the FCC request has sparked significant worry in the offices of the well-respected news magazine on 57th Street, West. Paramount Global, which owns CBS News, is reportedly considering a settlement as part of an effort to expedite a previously agreed-upon deal to be acquired by Skydance Media. Bill Owens, the executive producer of “60 Minutes,” has communicated to his team that the decision-making process at Paramount is complex and beyond their control. However, he has made it clear that the show will not back down from its journalistic work.
As a supporter, I’ve been privy to conversations between Owens and Wendy McMahon, CBS’s executive overseeing news and station operations. They both have expressed to higher-ups at Paramount that there seems to be no compelling reason for the company to settle this lawsuit. According to several legal experts, they view the case as weak and poorly structured.
