Steam has introduced a fresh alert on the Steam platforms of games still in early access, which have not received updates for an extended period.
SteamDB noticed that the early-access section on Steam pages now provides more detailed information. Previously, Steam indicated that early access games were incomplete and could potentially undergo further changes, but it’s becoming more precise about when a game was last updated, regardless of what the developers mentioned in their early access description. Notably, this seems to apply if an early-access title’s publicly available build has not been updated for over a year.
Consider the game Atlas, a pirate-themed open-world title from the same publisher as Ark: Survival Evolved. It was initially released in early access back in 2018, but since May 2023, no new updates have been provided by its developers. A notice on its Steam page now states, “Please be aware: The last update implemented by the developers was more than 20 months ago. The details and timeline shared by the developers might not be current anymore.” Similar disclaimers can be spotted on the Steam pages for games like Pirate Software’s Heartbound, Hi-Rez Studios’ Realm Royale Reforged, and League of Geeks’ Jumplight Odyssey.
While Steam doesn’t compel developers to maintain or release their games from early access, this notice serves as a heads up for prospective buyers, indicating that the game they intend to buy hasn’t received recent updates. You can verify the last update date of an early-access game by visiting the game’s news page on Steam or SteamDB.
