The Capcom Spotlight stream brought a lot of information about the plans of the Japanese developer.
During a brief presentation, the publisher responsible for “Resident Evil” and “Street Fighter” didn’t keep us waiting long. In approximately 30 minutes, they unveiled materials from Monster Hunter: Wilds, even revealing a brand new trailer. Moreover, they announced a remastered version of Onimusha 2 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (possibly also for PS5 and Series X/S). The revamped “Samurai’s Destiny” is scheduled to launch later this year, offering updated features tailored to modern audiences.
We’ve got the exact release date for the upcoming set of two-dimensional combat games from Capcom, dubbed Capcom Fighting Collection 2. This epic battle collection is set to drop on May 16, 2025, and will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. To add to the excitement, “Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics” has just made its way onto the Xbox One, and a brand new trailer for Mai Shiranui was unveiled as she prepares for her appearance in the upcoming “Street Fighter 6”.
New Onimusha in 2026
Since there was no update about Resident Evil at the event, attention shifted towards another game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The developers announced the game’s release for the year 2026 and shared fresh details during the show.
The video message for the players (you can find it below) may be short, yet it’s packed with more than just the launch date. Akihito Kadowaki, the game creator, emphasized three crucial aspects that aim to preserve the core elements of the franchise:
1. These features will ensure the game remains true to its roots.
2. The highlighted points are essential for maintaining the series’ identity.
3. The developer underlined three significant components that uphold the series’ defining traits.
- characters and enemies are fascinating not only visually, including the new character of Onimusha;
- Kyoto as a location with places of rich history, including the “mysterious and unsettling;”
- an amazing (or “ultimate”) sword fight, which is supposed to give satisfaction from cutting down enemies.
In Satoru Nihei’s (the director of the latest Onimusha) words, as we journey through Kyoto during the Edo period in the game, we’ll come across historical figures – these figures have been subtly adapted by the developers to align with the dark fantasy setting of Onimusha. Moreover, the developers hinted that the timing and decision on when to employ the signature Onimusha mechanic, which allows players to absorb the souls of vanquished demons, will play a crucial role in combat.
As an ardent fan, I can confirm Nihei’s reassurance that Onimusha: Way of the Sword won’t be an unattainably challenging title; instead, it promises to deliver a delightful combat experience tailored for action game enthusiasts, focusing on the thrill of sword fighting. However, during The Game Awards 2024, we were treated only to a segment from the gameplay trailer, as the developers didn’t provide a fresh gameplay presentation with their message.
