Netflix is unveiling its lineup of original Thai and Indonesian series and movies scheduled for release in 2025. As the streaming platform is stepping up investment in Southeast Asian content, it’s doing so at a moment when “the competition seems to be taking a step back,” Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s APAC (excluding India) Content VP, mentioned.
In 2024, nine Thai productions are showcased, according to Kim’s description as “eight groundbreaking local films that captivated audiences not just in Thailand but worldwide.” The Thai selection commences with “Dalah: Death and the Flowers” on February 27, a gripping murder mystery set within high society, featuring Urassaya Sperbund. This series is directed by Thanika Jenjesda and Alisa Pien, and it revolves around a secretive floral designer who finds herself embroiled in the enigmatic murder of a prime minister candidate on his wedding eve. Prabda Yoon serves as executive producer, supervising the entire production process.
Prominent genres in the Thai film industry include action-thrillers like “Ziam,” directed by Kulp Kaljareuk and starring Prin Suparat in a survival story set against food shortages. This production is brought to you by the creators of the worldwide sensation “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies.” “Mad Unicorn,” under the guidance of director Nottapon Boonprakob, follows Natara Nopparatayapon as a former street thug trying his luck in the express delivery business. Lastly, “The Believers” season 2 unfolds with Teeradon Supapunpinyo at the helm, exploring a conspiracy that links organized religion to local politics.
In April, you’ll find “Frozen Hot Boys,” an unusual sports drama directed by Naruebordee Wechakum and Tanakit Kittiapithan, about a mischievous teacher guiding rebellious students through a Japanese snow-sculpting competition. The lineup also features the period heist film “Khao Chum Thong,” directed by Wisit Sasanatieng, and the time-loop drama “Sum Wan Gub Someone” starring Jarinporn Joonkiat.
Two additional titles have been added to the Thai slate: “Tee Yai Rerk Dao Jone,” which is a period drama centering around two outlaws whose friendship is strained by a relentless detective pursuing a notorious gang of thieves in 1980s Bangkok, and “Everybody Loves Me When I’m Dead,” a story about two bank employees who naively try to steal from an unclaimed account, only to discover that the money they’ve taken belongs to dangerous individuals who will stop at nothing to reclaim it.
2025’s Indonesian film lineup commences on Valentine’s Day with “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” directed by Robert Ronny and starring Reza Rahadian as a playboy producing a dating show to fulfill his father’s final wish. In March, “Promised Hearts” (Setetes Embun Cinta Niyala) – an adaptation of Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s novel directed by Anggy Umbara and starring Beby Tsabina and Deva Mahenra – will be released. A month later, the premiere of “Losmen Bu Broto: The Series” takes place, which is a family drama set in a Yogyakarta inn and features an ensemble cast led by Mathias Muchus and Maudy Koesnadi.
The TV show titled ‘Ratu Ratu Queens: The Series’ focuses on four Indonesian characters portrayed by Nirina Zubir, Asri Welas, Happy Salma, and Tika Panggabean as they embark on fresh journeys in Queens, New York, guided by Lucky Kuswandi.
In the Indonesian film lineup, we have “A Normal Woman,” a psychological drama headlined by Marissa Anita; “The Actor” (Lupa Daratan), starring Vino G. Bastian as a once-acclaimed actor struggling with his skills; and “The Elixir” (Abadi Nan Jaya), an action-packed zombie survival thriller helmed by Kimo Stamboel, featuring Mikha Tambayong and Eva Celia among others.
According to Kim, the streaming platform strives to create programs that resonate with local viewers initially, yet are also accessible for anyone to enjoy from any location at any desired time.
