Over recent years, there’s been growing doubt about the future of comic book movies and series, with the term “superhero exhaustion” being bandied about after some big Marvel films didn’t meet expectations. However, Robert Kirkman, a co-creator, co-runner, and executive producer of the violent animated series “Invincible,” which is set to premiere Season 3, remains optimistic about the genre.
As a passionate film buff, I expressed my thoughts at the LA premiere of “Invisible” Season 3 on Monday night: while I don’t entirely agree with the notion of ‘superhero fatigue,’ I do believe that the superhero genre has reached such saturation that it needs a fresh twist to keep viewers engaged. It’s no longer enough just to be a superhero show; you must offer something unique to stand out, as the initial novelty seems to have faded. Yet, this presents an exciting opportunity, as now everyone is so well-versed in superheroes that we can explore innovative directions with these characters.
Jay Pharoah, reprising his role as Bulletproof/Zandale Randolph in Season 3, mirrored Kirkman’s thoughts, acknowledging the show’s “Invincible” fanbase surge. He believes that the series has gained such rapid popularity because viewers can identify with the characters. In the world of superheroes, it’s common to overlook character development. But as Jay put it, “Who truly cares about when he’s going to explode?” instead, referring to the emotional connection audiences form with these characters.
In the ongoing storyline of “Invincible”, we follow the character arc of Mark Grayson/Invincible (played by Steven Yeun), who has taken on a guiding role for his newfound younger sibling Oliver (Lincoln Bodin). Oliver is eager to develop his emerging powers at an accelerated pace. Simultaneously, Mark grapples with his professional obligations, working under Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins) at the Global Defense Agency. Meanwhile, he strives to safeguard his loved ones, including his mother Debbie (portrayed by Sandra Oh).
In his analysis, Yeun noted the intricate balance between Mark’s influential status and his journey through the challenges of maturity. He explained, “What makes this series so captivating is its continuous development, portraying this character’s growth as he navigates adulthood… One instant, you’re arguing with your father like a rebellious teenager, and the next, you’re reprimanding your younger sibling in much the same way.
Gillian Jacobs, who plays Atom Eve/Samantha Eve Wilkins since Season 1 (and continues to do so in her character’s 2023 spin-off), attributes the success of the show to Robert Kirkman’s writing skills.
Jacobs remarked, “I’m captivated by how events on the series seem to echo throughout future episodes and seasons. It gives the sense that this story takes place within a realm where actions truly matter and the characters are deeply affected by them.
In the third season of “Invincible”, there’s no shortage of the intense action that fans have grown accustomed to. Yet, Khary Payton, reprising his role as Black Samson/Markus Grimshaw, believes the series truly shines in its ability to delve into deep, human narratives.
‘Invincible’ centers around family, and in my opinion, when it’s done correctly, it’s always centered around family,” Payton expressed. “Batman remains about the child in the alley, Superman continues to be about the kid on the farm. The genuine aspects. For 25 years, I portrayed Cyborg in ‘Teen Titans’, and what consistently drives him is his struggle with his father regarding life’s true priorities.
The third season of the show titled “Invincible” will air its initial three episodes on February 6th (Thursday). After that, new episodes will be released on a weekly basis on Amazon Prime Video.
