Age of Mythology: Retold is the Next Xbox Game to Launch on PS5

Xbox Game Studios persist in releasing their titles on competing consoles, a move that could eventually turn them into what was once considered a rival. In a recent announcement on the Age of Empires website, it was disclosed that the upcoming game in the series, Age of Mythology: Retold, and the updated edition of Age of Empires 2, will both be playable on the PlayStation 5. This revelation follows Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer’s comments about making Xbox games available across various platforms. Most recently, Xbox enthusiasts were disheartened upon learning that another long-time exclusive, Forza Horizon 5, is also set to launch on the PlayStation 5.

Another long-time Xbox exclusive series is making the jump to PlayStation

The Age of Empires series has been a mainstay since 1997, and the initial Age of Mythology game was launched in 2002. Initially developed by Ensemble Studios, this company was bought by Microsoft in 2001 and continued to produce until it closed in 2009. Under Microsoft’s ownership, Ensemble created multiple real-time strategy games such as the first Age of Mythology and Halo Wars.

For a while now, the real-time strategy series has been exclusively available on Xbox platforms, with occasional releases on PC as well. However, in recent times, these games have also graced Xbox consoles. This latest announcement signifies that for the first time, a game from this series will be playable on a PlayStation console. On their official website, the Age of Empires team stated, “I’m thrilled to announce that we are expanding the playing options for fans by bringing Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold to PlayStation 5.” The newer title, Age of Mythology: Retold, is set to debut on March 4th, while the release date for Age of Empires 2 has been scheduled for Spring.

Both games are set to receive additional downloadable content (DLC). The team behind Age of Empires revealed that the expansion for Age of Mythology: Retold, titled Immortal Pillars, will be released on the same day as the game’s launch on PS5. Furthermore, the announcement for Age of Empires 2 also mentions a forthcoming DLC expansion, which they claim is one of the most exciting yet, offering new content, new civilizations for ranked play, and compatibility across all platforms. This seems to imply that the game will support crossplay between PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5.

The flow of Xbox Studio games moving towards launch on PlayStation is expanding steadily. If the rumored PlayStation State of Play next week turns out to be true, it could mark the beginning of several Xbox Studios games being showcased on their competitor’s platform. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set for release early in 2025 on PlayStation 5, while Forza Horizon 5 has already confirmed its arrival on the console. As for other significant first-party Xbox games like Halo: Infinite or Gears of War: E-Day, they haven’t made any announcements yet, but the likelihood is growing.

According to Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft’s Gaming division, they plan to offer robust support for the newly unveiled Nintendo Switch 2. If Nintendo’s upcoming console boasts sufficient power, it could potentially serve as a significant distribution channel for Xbox games.

The recent Xbox Developer Direct event was impressive, yet it was noted that four out of five games displayed are also slated for PlayStation 5 release. Last week, Microsoft disclosed a financial report detailing a 7% dip in revenue for their gaming division in the closing quarters of 2024 compared to the previous year. This decline was largely due to a 29% decrease in Xbox console sales. Despite growing as the largest video game publisher, Xbox seems to be lagging behind its rival console manufacturers at an alarming rate.
