Former USPS Worker Stole Over $100,000 Worth Of Pokemon Cards And Other Memorabilia

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been sending some precious collectibles through the mail, trusting in its safety. However, it appears that one ex-USPS employee, Shelby Dozier, allegedly took advantage of his position and helped himself to some of these packages instead. He recently pleaded guilty to stealing mail from a postal service employee, a charge stemming from at least 10 incidents, which reportedly occurred during his time as a sorting clerk at a USPS office in New Jersey.

From September to December of 2022, it’s claimed that Dozier stole the contents from at least ten packages that were posted to an auction house in Clifton, New Jersey. According to USA Today, these packages contained high-value items such as Michael Jordan and Mickey Mantle trading cards, numerous graded sports cards, Pokemon cards, signed jerseys, signed photographs, and other memorabilia.

Colleagues of Dozier became suspicious when they found opened and empty packages in the men’s locker room at work. Authorities confirmed their suspicions using phone records, attendance logs, and eventually searched his iCloud account. They discovered evidence of him selling stolen memorabilia to various sellers. As part of his plea deal, Dozier is required to repay $108,692.92 to his victims, though sentencing has not been handed down yet. The charge could result in a maximum prison sentence of five years if he is found guilty.

Over the past few years, there’s been an uptick in cases of trading card theft. This seems to be due, in part, to the growing popularity of expensive and rare cards, particularly in the realms of Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering, fueled by public figures like Logan Paul. Last October, two individuals were detained on suspicion of stealing cards worth approximately $150,000 from a game store. However, some of the stolen cards were later found.
