According to a YouTuber, it appears that the upcoming addition to the Battlefield series, likely titled Battlefield 6, is planning to reintroduce the popular Battlefield Portal feature, which was included in the otherwise poorly-received Battlefield 2042.
In a video posted on Monday, content creator Flakfire shared that he was invited to an online event where they discussed the community testing experience within the Battlefield Labs. The developers confirmed during this presentation that Portal, a platform for custom games in 2042, will be making a comeback in the forthcoming Battlefield title, according to Flakfire’s account.
In Battlefield 2042, the Portal mode offers maps, weapons, and vehicles from past games such as Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3. It’s unclear what the Portal mode might include in future Battlefield games, but according to Flakfire, developers hinted that it could be a feature that players can try out in the Battlefield Labs testing program.
In 2042 when it first came out, Electronic Arts referred to Battlefield Portal as a “heartfelt tribute” for the franchise’s supporters. Initially, this feature stirred up a wave of nostalgia among players and critics at launch, but over time, the fan response towards the mode has cooled down somewhat in more recent years.
Potential players of Battlefield 6 could influence the design of the next version of Battlefield Portal if they join Battlefield Labs, a testing program. The enthusiasm for this program has surpassed EA’s expectations, leading to some sign-up issues on the webpage. However, EA is addressing these technical problems, and the first Battlefield Labs test sessions are expected to start within a few weeks.
