First Glance: “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”

It’s no secret that superhero fatigue is a genuine concern, and the question now is just how pervasive it has become. Many speculate that Marvel’s upcoming movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” could serve as an indicator of its extent. This film marks Marvel’s first introduction of their original family into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although specifics about this integration are still somewhat unclear. Recently, Marvel Studios released their initial teaser trailer for the movie, and it appears to embody the essence of the early source material while also featuring some notable differences.

For the first appearance of the team in their comic books back in 1961, the story takes place in a 1960s-inspired futuristic universe distinct from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s primary timeline. From what we can see in the trailer, the Fantastic Four – comprising of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach – are already well-established within their world. Instead of rehashing their origins, the story touches upon them. Each character gets to display their unique abilities, with only Reed Richards briefly absent from demonstrating his powers in the footage provided. We also catch a fleeting glimpse of the film’s villain, Galactus, who is voiced by Ralph Ineson.

The intriguing preview primarily catches my attention due to its striking visuals, but it doesn’t significantly excite me. To be honest, the multiverse idea still seems like a convenient device, and the results thus far have fallen short of expectations. However, being a devotee of the Fantastic Four and some of the chosen actors, I’m eager to witness how Marvel develops these characters and the storyline for us viewers.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to announce that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” hits the big screen on July 25th!
