‘Paradise Lost’ Director Joe Berlinger to Helm Present-Day Reimagining of Cold War Thriller ‘Fail-Safe’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Joe Berlinger, a renowned U.S. filmmaker famous for his award-winning true crime documentary series “Paradise Lost” on HBO, is planning to direct a new movie that will offer a fresh take on the Cold War suspense story, “Fail-Safe.

The 1962 novel titled “Fail-Safe” written by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler, initially brought to life on the silver screen by Sidney Lumet, paints a chilling picture of an event where a technical malfunction in the U.S. military’s hierarchy leads to an unintentional escalation towards a potential nuclear conflict with the Soviet Union.

Based on reports, Berlinger’s interpretation of the novel employs a “pseudo-documentary style” to depict a hypothetical scenario where the events described in the book actually occurred in 1967, resulting in the total nuclear destruction of New York and Moscow. The movie aims to blend intense global politics with traditional documentary narrative techniques to redefine the Cold War political thriller for modern viewers.

In 1964, Lumet’s acclaimed film featured Henry Fonda portraying a rational U.S. president and Walter Matthau as an impulsive political thinker. A modern adaptation with Richard Dreyfuss, George Clooney, and Harvey Keitel explored the same theme in 2000 for television.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Berlinger’s modern take on “Fail-Safe” is now in the works, and I’ve got an exciting update about who’s behind it. This project will be brought to life by Maria Farinha Films & Co., based right here in Los Angeles. Interestingly, this isn’t just any studio – it’s the U.S. branch of the renowned Brazilian social impact entertainment company, Maria Farinha Films. They’ve made a big name for themselves back home with their hit Globoplay Original “Aruanas.” So, buckle up, fellow film lovers, as we gear up for an intriguing reinterpretation of this classic tale!

Maria Farinha Films (MFF) has a smaller share in Joanna Natasegara’s well-respected London production company, Violet Films. Notable works produced by Violet include “White Helmets,” “Virunga,” “The Edge of Democracy,” and Prince Harry’s Netflix series “Invictus.” MFF & Co is led by U.S. producer Miura Kite, who previously served as the Executive Vice President of global television at Participant.

“In a released statement, Kite expressed that ‘Fail-Safe’ is a captivating and relatable tale, still resonating in today’s world just as it did when it enthralled readers for the first time in 1962. They feel privileged to contribute to this remarkable venture, guided by the talented Joe Berlinger, whose work consistently engages audiences globally and incites meaningful transformation.”

Estela Renner, co-founder and chief creative officer at MFF & Co, expressed her longstanding admiration for Joe Berlinger’s work, from his powerful documentary ‘Crude’ on oil pollution in the Amazon Rainforest to his collaborative effort with actors and visually striking concept in ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.’ She emphasized that as we approach a time where nuclear accidents are increasingly possible, this film underscores the critical relevance of the nuclear issue amidst ongoing discussions about privatization and AI’s role in decision-making. She noted that fiction offers a unique platform to make global topics like this resonate with people.
