Atari Revisits An Arcade Classic With Breakout Beyond

2026 marks the golden jubilee of the arcade legend Breakout. But Atari is jumping on the celebration bandwagon a bit early with a refreshed version of the game called Breakout Beyond. Initially unveiled as an exclusive for Intellivision’s Amico in 2018, this updated title will now have a broader launch later this year. In the video below, you can get a sneak peek at some of the contemporary enhancements that are set to revitalize the gameplay experience in Breakout Beyond.

Choice Provisions is responsible for updating the gameplay of Breakout Beyond, a game originally designed by Nolan Bushnell, Steve Wozniak, and Steve Bristow from Atari, and Apple respectively. In essence, players control a ball much like in Pong to bounce it off and demolish bricks that obstruct their path.

In contrast to the Breakout arcade game, this updated version will play out horizontally across a broader playfield. Breakout Beyond also offers combos that amplify the force of the projectiles and intensify the visual spectacle from the destruction. A novel addition is the ability to slow down time for better control over the projectile, albeit at the expense of a lower score. The game features 72 levels, and a second player can participate through local cooperative play. Furthermore, an unlockable endless mode will be available with a global online ranking system.

Breakout Beyond from Atari isn’t scheduled yet, but it’s expected to launch in 2025 across various platforms including Atari VCS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Last year, Atari acquired Intellivision, however, they still plan to release the Amico. As of now, it’s unclear if Breakout Beyond will be available on the system where it was initially intended.
