Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t a sign that Dark Souls devs have suddenly started following trends, although it has „elements absent from any other FromSoftware game”

In a recent chat with PC Gamer, Junya Ishizaki, director of Elden Ring: Nightreign, discussed various aspects of the upcoming game, including the integration of roguelike features.

The announcement revealed that the game would concentrate on compressing the RPG experience. Subsequently, the studio encountered certain design hurdles, which they seem to have overcome using strategies from “roguelike” games. This wasn’t a response to following current trends, but rather a necessary consequence of the game’s development – it was essential for gameplay centered around brief sessions, emphasizing multiplayer aspects.

In an interview, Junya Ishizaki stated that our approach has never been about avoiding what other companies are doing or ignoring trends. Instead, we viewed the features we incorporated as intriguing aspects that could enhance the multiplayer-centric, session-based gameplay within our game – it wasn’t about jumping on a bandwagon for us.

The director reminded us that novel mechanics and features had to be created and refined, as none were seen in Elden Ring or any other FromSoftware title before. He didn’t offer specific examples, but we won’t have to wait much longer for details. Excitingly, the official online trials of the game will begin on February 14th.
