‘Doctor Who’ Producer Jane Tranter to Chair 50th Edinburgh TV Festival

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve taken on the role of Advisory Chair for the 2025 Edinburgh TV Festival. This year holds a special significance as it commemorates the golden jubilee of its esteemed MacTaggart Lecture, a milestone that adds an extra layer of excitement to this prestigious event.

The prominent TV executive, who’s leading the production company Bad Wolf (responsible for “Doctor Who” in collaboration with BBC Studios), will collaborate with creative director Rowan Woods to determine the festival’s artistic vision and content strategy.

Tranter boasts considerable experience in the entertainment industry, having held positions such as the controller of drama and fiction at the BBC, followed by founding BBC Worldwide Productions in Los Angeles. Notably, her portfolio encompasses critically acclaimed shows like “The Night Of,” which won an Emmy, “Industry” produced jointly by BBC and HBO, and “I Hate Suzie,” which earned a BAFTA award. Additionally, she served as executive producer for the culturally significant drama series “Succession,” also on HBO.

The festival is making significant adjustments to its programming strategy by inviting submissions for session concepts and producers, marking a shift from the old advisory committee system. Producers selected for sessions will receive free festival passes, while a series of nationwide town hall meetings will allow for input on setting the event’s schedule.

For the 2025 event, we’ll broaden our accessibility efforts by offering more scholarships and launching a special program tailored for first-time participants.

Tranter stated that the British television industry has significantly grown over the past fifty years, largely thanks to the unique, varied, and gifted individuals, both behind and in front of the camera, who have contributed their perspectives. He expressed his desire for these voices to be amplified even more during the Edinburgh TV Festival’s 50th anniversary, urging them to create a vibrant, engaging, and jubilant uproar.

Festival leader Fatima Salaria commended Tranter, describing her as an “energetic force,” highlighting her “spirit of playfulness and bravery in the face of risk.

Speakers at the previous Edinburgh TV Festival have been notable figures from the television industry, such as Jesse Armstrong, Billy Connolly, Steve Coogan, Brian Cox, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
