A whisper about an upcoming State of Play presentation for PlayStation, set to occur within the next week, has emerged. Notably, gaming insider ‘NatetheHate’, who previously confirmed the unveiling timeline of the Nintendo Switch 2, has hinted at this potential presentation on social media.
Typically, Sony Interactive Entertainment schedules a State of Play event in either January or February, but as of now, nothing formal has been confirmed. Keeping in mind that both PlayStation’s first-party studios and Xbox have several anticipated games slated for release this year, this could be an opportune moment for Sony to reveal more details about their upcoming projects.
Rumors suggest a PlayStation State of Play could be happening next week, will Xbox make an appearance?
It’s possible that this upcoming PlayStation presentation might delve into games produced by Xbox Studios for the first time. The fact that Forza Horizon 5, an exclusive series for Xbox, is coming to the PlayStation 5 suggests there may be further collaborations. Even a trailer for Forza Horizon 5 could potentially be unveiled during this event. Moreover, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, developed by MachineGames (an Xbox studio), was announced last year to launch on PlayStation sometime in early 2025. This presentation might provide a more specific release date.
In 2025, there are several significant games from PlayStation that are slated for release, such as Ghost of Yotei by Sucker Punch (a follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima), which was unveiled during a State of Play last September. Since the release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, this might be an ideal time for a fresh announcement about it. In February’s State of Play, Hideo Kojima disclosed the complete title of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, along with an enticing nearly ten-minute trailer. However, like Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2 also doesn’t have a specific release date as of now, but it is anticipated to come out in 2025 as well.
2024 saw a mix of triumphs and setbacks for PlayStation in the realm of live-service games. Helldivers 2 kicked off the year with impressive sales, setting a new record as PlayStation’s fastest-selling game ever. However, later in the year, PlayStation faced challenges following the controversial launch of Concord, which has since been discontinued and reportedly drained Sony’s resources. Nevertheless, anticipation remains high for more live-service games from PlayStation’s first-party studios, such as Bungie’s Marathon and Fairgame$ by Haven Studios. It is hoped that these upcoming releases will help Sony and PlayStation apply the lessons learned from Concord.
Other games besides those mentioned might be unveiled or given a release date during the alleged State of Play event, such as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater (whose release date is still unknown), Resident Evil 9 (which could potentially offer an open-world experience), or maybe a sneak peek into Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, it’s unlikely we’ll get much detail about the latter at this time. So, we’ll just have to wait and see if these rumors turn out to be true and what PlayStation decides to announce.
