Instagram is experimenting with an often-demanded function for Reels, aiming to attract TikTok users to the Meta-managed platform, given the possibility of a U.S. ban on it.
On January 19, 2025, TikTok’s ban in the US officially started, however, President Trump signed an order postponing the enactment of the law the following day.
Regardless, the TikTok app cannot be downloaded from either Google Play Store or Apple App Store. As a result, some users are resorting to purchasing new devices that already have the TikTok app pre-installed on eBay.
Meanwhile, some individuals have shifted towards different venues such as Instagram Reels. Now, the platform owned by Meta is striving to enhance the user experience on these alternatives.
Instagram finally tests a Reels pause button
As reported by CNBC, Meta started trialing the fresh pause function for Instagram Reels among a limited group of users towards the end of January 2025.
For the first time, Instagram is introducing a popular TikTok feature where users can control video playback simply by tapping the screen instead of having to hold down on it to pause.
Users of the latest feature update can effortlessly stop a video by just tapping the screen, unlike before when a single tap would only mute the video while it continued playing in the background.
For some time now, users of Reels have been asking for this specific feature. However, since TikTok was taken off the app stores, the number of requests for it has significantly increased.
This user finds Instagram Reels difficult to engage with. They question the design, as they can’t find a way to pause the videos. They also wonder if their algorithm assumes a lower intelligence based on the content suggested.”
“The user isn’t enjoying Instagram Reels and has some concerns about its interface. Specifically, they can’t seem to figure out how to pause the videos, and they question if the recommended content is based on assumptions of their intellectual level.
I’m finding it hard to engage with Instagram Reels. What’s the deal with this interface being so inconvenient? Why isn’t there a pause option available? And, is it true that my feed’s algorithm on here considers me as if I have lower intellectual capabilities?

“You can’t even pause shit on reels I do not wanna go to Instagram man,” a second user shared.
Since the ban on January 19, Instagram hasn’t held back on trying to attract TikTok users. In fact, as early as January 21, it started offering incentives to TikTok creators, with bonuses ranging from $10,000 to $50,000.
Yet, the creators must commit to making their content unique to Instagram for a specific duration, meaning they cannot share it immediately on platforms like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or other social media outlets.
