Kelsey Grammer and Ted Danson Didn’t Speak for 30 Years After Danson Confronted Him on ‘Cheers’ Set: ‘I’m Kind of Mad You Don’t Show Up Ready to Go’

Kelsey Grammer has explained to the New York Post the reason behind his 30-year estrangement from “Cheers” co-star Ted Danson. During a podcast interview last October, Danson apologized for an on-set incident that led to their long silence. According to Grammer, it wasn’t one specific event that caused their friendship to crumble, but rather a buildup of tension that eventually resulted in them going separate ways.

Things may have been overexaggerated, as there wasn’t much disagreement,” Grammer clarified. “That situation occurred during a challenging period in my life, where I was grappling with self-doubt and negative feelings about myself. It was a time when I was heavily drinking.”

“It seems like the matter may have been exaggerated unnecessarily, as there wasn’t much of an argument,” Grammer explained. “That incident took place during a tough phase in my life where I had self-doubt and low self-esteem. It was a period when I was heavily consuming alcohol.

In simpler terms, “Grammer stated that Ted had expressed his frustration by saying, ‘You know, I’m a bit upset because you aren’t always prepared,'” and Grammer responded, “I understand that,” effectively acknowledging Ted’s concern. This seemed to resolve the issue, as they parted ways amicably. It’s possible that Ted distanced himself from what could have been a stronger friendship, or he needed to shield himself. I can’t say for certain, but Grammer thanked him for his honesty and they were able to move past it.

Initially, Grammer didn’t foresee that Danson’s rebuke of his actions would significantly affect their friendship, but unfortunately, they fell out of contact for nearly three decades. Over this period, Ted Danson starred as Sam Malone in the hit sitcom “Cheers” for eleven seasons from 1982 to 1993. Kelsey Grammer joined the show in its third season, portraying Dr. Frasier Crane, and by Season 5, he had become a regular cast member. Later on, he spearheaded the successful spin-off series titled “Frasier.

Last year, I had the privilege of reconnecting with Kelsey Grammer on Woody Harrelson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast. In a heartfelt moment, I openly acknowledged my part for the first time publicly in our past misunderstandings.

During the “Cheers” era, Danson admitted that he and Grammer seemed to have a slight impasse. He recalled an instance where he got upset with Grammer, an incident both of them still remember vividly. However, Danson expressed regret that he might have missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer’s life. He feels it was his fault and almost wishes to apologize for it.

I didn’t act, and I regret it deeply, both for you and myself,” Danson stated, expressing his apologies.

Later on, Grammer expressed gratitude to Danson for the apology and mentioned that he, too, wished they could have spent a little more time with each other. He further added, “My affection for you has always been as natural as a sunrise.
