It seems that the release of a fresh Need for Speed game might be delayed as Criterion, its developers, are fully committed to working on the upcoming Battlefield project at the moment. However, Electronic Arts (EA) assures fans that Need for Speed will make a comeback in due time.
Eurogamer recently interviewed Vince Zampella, head of Battlefield, regarding Criterion’s new position under Battlefield Studios. This shift, with Criterion assisting in the single-player aspect for the upcoming Battlefield game, raises speculation about whether the studio will solely concentrate on the shooter series moving forward.
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to announce that the folks behind The Need for Speed at Criterion are teaming up with their Battlefield buddies! Last year, we made it our mission to hear from you, our amazing Need for Speed community. We’ve been absorbing your valuable feedback and using it to craft content for Unbound. With a deeper understanding of what you, our players, desire in a Need for Speed adventure, we’re eager to reinvigorate the franchise with fresh and captivating ideas!
In September 2023, EA disclosed that Criterion was participating in the development of the next Battlefield title. However, they also mentioned that Criterion would still be engaged with the Need for Speed series as well. Previously, Criterion had collaborated on Battlefield V and Battlefield 2042. Interestingly, a group of former Criterion developers established Fuse Games earlier in 2023 following the release of Need for Speed Unbound, the latest installment in the franchise.
In 2010, Criterion became the primary studio for the racing series with the release of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and this was followed by Need for Speed: Most Wanted in 2012. Prior to this, they were primarily recognized for creating and managing the Burnout franchise. Later on, Ghost Games took over the Need for Speed franchise, beginning with Need for Speed Rivals in 2013 and concluding with Need for Speed Heat in 2019. In 2020, it was announced that Criterion would return to Need for Speed, resulting in the release of 2022’s Need for Speed Unbound. Additionally, Team Kaizen, who assisted with Need for Speed Unbound, has also joined Criterion to contribute to the next Battlefield project, as mentioned on EA’s website.
As for the next Battlefield, no release date has been publicly unveiled yet.
