Karla Sofía Gascón Says Tweet Calling ‘Emilia Pérez’ Co-Star Selena Gomez a ‘Rich Rat’ Is ‘Not Mine’: ‘I Would Never Refer to Her That Way’

Karla Sofia Gascón asserts that the widely-shared tweet allegedly made by her, referring to her “Emilia Perez” screen partner Selena Gomez as a “wealthy rodent,” was entirely fictitious or invented.

During an interview with CNN en Español on Saturday, Gascón clarified, ‘It’s certainly not about my partner. I’ve never spoken about her in such terms, and I never will.’

Variet has found out that the CNN interview for Emilia Pérez was orchestrated by Gascón, rather than being arranged via Netflix, its distributor.

Last week, Gascón faced criticism over a series of questionable tweets touching on topics like George Floyd, diversity at the Oscars, and Muslims. One of his posts, which caught attention from outlets like People, appeared to comment about Gomez as follows: “She’s a wealthy rodent who feigns poverty whenever she can and will continue tormenting her ex-boyfriend (Justin Bieber) and his wife.” However, the Academy Award nominee has since claimed that this specific tweet was not authentic.

Yesterday, Gascón posted on Instagram a detailed reaction to the social media uproar, echoing the assertion that her statements had been distorted or misrepresented.

She posted on Saturday morning: “They’ve already triumphed, they’ve accomplished their goal, to sully my life with falsehoods or misinterpretations,” she wrote. “Anyone who truly knows me is aware that I am not a bigot (you might be shocked when you discover one of the most vital individuals in my current life, whom I adore dearly, is Muslim) and neither am I any of the things for which I have been labeled and condemned without due process or chance to clarify my genuine motives. I have always advocated for a fairer society and a world filled with freedom, peace, and love. I will never endorse wars, religious fanaticism, or the suppression of races and cultures.
