Will Sharpe No Longer Directing Crying in H Mart

As a supporter, I’m sharing an update about the upcoming adaptation of Michelle Zauner’s best-selling memoir, “Crying in H Mart.” In an exclusive interview with SSense, Michelle herself revealed that the project is currently on hold due to complications from the Hollywood strikes and the departure of director Will Sharpe.

Michelle spent a year crafting the screenplay, which was a challenging yet enriching experience for her. Although the film isn’t moving forward at the moment, she remains hopeful that it will be made someday. In the meantime, Michelle is pouring her energy into other creative endeavors, so the movie adaptation will have to wait.

The rights to adapt Zauner’s poignant reflections on the loss of her mother to terminal cancer and her Korean heritage were acquired by MGM’s Orion Pictures in 2021. The book offers a glimpse into Zauner’s upbringing in an almost entirely white Oregon school, her time spent with her grandmother in Seoul, meeting her future spouse, and the formation of her band, Japanese Breakfast, which will contribute to the film’s soundtrack.

In his initial conversation with People magazine in 2023, Sharpe expressed that many aspects struck a chord with him, being someone who is half-Japanese and half-British, and spent his childhood in Tokyo. He particularly related to the depictions of feeling jet-lagged in one’s family’s kitchen, as these experiences felt familiar to him. Meanwhile, Zauner stated that Sharpe’s directorial sensitivity, his talent for finding humor and elegance amid everyday tragedies, and his personal background, growing up between two cultures, make him an ideal choice for directing this film.
