Which actors are set to team up with Tomdaya in the bustling cast of Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming movie, “The Odyssey”? It seems that several performers who have previously worked within the Nolan-verse are set to reappear, with fresh faces like Himesh Patel (from “Tenet”), Elliot Page (“Inception”), and Bill Irwin (“Interstellar”) now joining the roster. There are also rumors swirling about Robert Pattinson and other stars who have collaborated with Nolan in the past potentially playing leading roles in his forthcoming adaptation of the Greek epic. As “The Odyssey” is being filmed using cutting-edge IMAX film technology, this production will essentially serve as a grand reunion regardless. Here’s what we currently know about “The Odyssey,” including its plot, filming locations, and planned release date.
What’s it about?
Titled as “a mythic action epic traversing the globe,” The Odyssey is inspired by Homer’s ancient Greek poem chronicling a king’s dangerous odyssey back to his wife following the Trojan War. In December 2024, Universal shared the film’s title via a post on X. Since then, we haven’t received any official plot details, but if it adheres to its source material, audiences can anticipate encounters with gods, goddesses, sirens, mythical beasts, and plenty of mortal peril.
So it’s not a vampire movie?
As a follower, I must admit, I was taken aback when this wasn’t a revamped version of the classic epic as we were led to believe. There had been much buzz about Nolan’s upcoming film before its title was revealed. The Hollywood Reporter even hinted at it potentially being either a period vampire thriller or a helicopter action thriller. However, it turned out to be something entirely different and unrelated.
Who’s in the cast?
Since Zendaya last appeared alongside two other young actors, Christopher Nolan has cast her in his upcoming movie, marking the first time Tom Holland and Zendaya will star together outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With these two global superstars, who are even more renowned as a couple, appearing in a film that’s expected to garner attention from movie enthusiasts worldwide, we can only anticipate significant box-office success and numerous award nominations. Given their track records, this is exactly what they excel at.
A significant number of the announced cast members have previously worked with Christopher Nolan, such as Anne Hathaway, who starred in both The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, and Matt Damon, who was part of Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Robert Pattinson is set to collaborate once more with his Tenet director, while THR reports that Benny Safdie, another cast member of Oppenheimer, will move on to The Odyssey. Deadline revealed on January 31st that three additional actors from Nolan’s cinematic universe – Himesh Patel (Tenet), Elliot Page (Inception), and Bill Irwin (Interstellar) – are also joining this journey.
It’s important to note that just because Nolan hasn’t worked with these new talents – Samantha Norton, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o – before on one of his films, it doesn’t mean they won’t be part of The Odyssey. In fact, there are reports suggesting that they might be joining the cast.
That’s a big cast. Who are the main characters?
Based on a November 2024 report by The Hollywood Reporter, there’s buzz circulating around Universal Studios that Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson make up the main cast or “Core Four” for the upcoming movie.
Where and when is it filming?
As reported by Variety, a portion of The Odyssey will be filmed on the Sicilian island Favignana, colloquially known as “goat island.” This location is believed to be one of the actual places that Homer envisioned Odysseus visiting in his travels. Filming on Favignana is anticipated to start around late March. Additionally, Variety mentions that there are plans to shoot scenes in Sicily’s Aeolian islands, the United Kingdom, and Morocco as well.
Does The Odyssey have a release date?
Yup. It’s currently set to sail into theaters on July 17, 2026 in IMAX.
