In approximately a year since our previous discussion on combat in Dev Diary 7, we’ve prepared this article to offer an in-depth exploration of the various actions you can take during your nighttime adventures.
Brawling
In BL2, if blades appear and you haven’t taken specific measures to single out your target, you’ll likely find yourself surrounded. Although several discipline abilities can aid in escape or quickly ending a fight, you may need to engage in hand-to-hand combat when those options aren’t an option. Maintaining distance is crucial – your basic attacks can easily defeat single opponents but are dangerous when you’re being attacked from all directions.
As a game developer, I prioritized crafting unique attack sets for each clan during the design phase. Banu’s attacks are swift and sharp, Ventrue’s are firm and precise, Tremere has extended reach to keep enemies at bay, while Brujah just packs a punch. It’s a minor detail, but I believe it significantly assists players in embodying the attitude and demeanor of their chosen clan.
Dashing is a versatile skill that Phyre possesses, irrespective of the clan. It serves an essential role in keeping a safe distance. Not only can it be used defensively, but also offensively – darting forward just as a strike connects will shatter your opponent’s defense, leaving them vulnerable for a swift retaliation, although this technique works optimally in one-on-one encounters.
Kicks serve as effective strategies, ideal for managing crowds. By following a sprint with an immediate attack, you can choose the type of kick based on your movement direction. A sweeping roundhouse kick can topple a massive group but won’t provide much room, whereas a back kick can propel a single opponent far away. Since both parties can withstand repeated attacks, it’s wise to vary your techniques to maintain control.
Instead of relying on kicks to push enemies away, opt for telekinesis to pull them nearer. It’s useful for dragging a selected adversary towards you for a subsequent attack or nourishment, but keep in mind that Kindred and their ghouls might anticipate this tactic.
Utilizing telekinesis, one could swiftly dispose of an unaware foe by drawing them towards the very brink of a building’s roof, which might lead to their fatal plunge from great heights onto the pavement below.
As a gamer, I found that objects around me, like bottles and ashtrays, can be picked up with my telekinetic powers and flung for a bit of distraction against my foes. But if I’m looking to make a real ruckus, I’ll grab an explosive item, like a gas tank, and hurl it at the enemies – a smart move when you want to take out multiple opponents all at once.
As a gamer, I can tell you that in this game, Telekinesis isn’t just about moving objects around – it’s a tool for combat! From a simple knife to a powerful sniper rifle, anything on the battlefield can be picked up with ease. Phyre’s design philosophy emphasizes speed and fluidity, so they integrated Telekinesis seamlessly into weapon use. This means you can quickly take down one opponent, empty their gun into another, and chuck it at a third to set them up for your next strike. It’s all about the rhythm of battle!
This tool becomes even more effective when combined with your disciplines. For instance, Tremere’s explosive blood curse could be detonated from afar with an accurate shot, while Brujah’s provocation (when employed alongside mass manipulation) may persuade a group of adversaries to discard their weapons, enabling you to convert them against their owners.
When I’m going up against baddies armed with explosives, using my telekinetic powers can make things go boom in a big way!

Elixirs
In Seattle, we find a significant number of Thin-bloods, lesser vampires who brew potent “elixirs” using alchemy, enhancing their otherwise unattainable vampiric abilities. During your journey, you can discover and gather these elixirs to provide an advantage in battles or balance the odds against formidable bosses.
The four elixirs Phyre can use are:
Mending Elixir – Instantly restores health, allowing you to avoid final death.
Elixir of Blood – Instantaneously replenishes your blood resources for your skills, perfect for maintaining ability sequences.
Potence Elixir – Temporarily boosts your strength, increasing the damage caused by your attacks.
Marble-Skinned Potion – Provisionally transforms your skin into marble, lessening the harm sustained from assaults.
Ability Combos
Lately, I’ve embarked on a new gaming session to try out my preferred Clan Tremere. The strategic battles have provided me with an enjoyable feeling of controlling the game environment. At the outset, I’ve positioned my Recall spell strategically high for easy escape if things get too intense.
As the game progresses, blending Disciplines from various Clans can significantly enhance your ability to take down potent Kindred. For instance, Ventrue’s Mass Manipulation is a valuable tool for controlling multiple opponents simultaneously. Furthermore, employing Banu Haqim’s Mute on a group can ensure the battle remains inconspicuous to nearby enemies. Keep in mind that it’s not just your powers but also the environment that can offer hidden advantages, such as discovering useful items left behind.
Some adversaries may prove challenging to overcome, but I’m thrilled that you’ll get a taste of the predicament you’ll find yourself in when you encounter your initial Kindred opponent. Their abilities can swiftly turn well-prepared battles sour if you find yourself on the ground and surrounded.
By summoning a Cauldron of Blood and luring the crowd towards a screamingly distressed individual, I can then choose one to detonate with the Blood Curse, creating a large gap before I even engage in combat. In case of an unexpected turn of events, a swift application of Blood Curse on a pursuing ghoul followed by a well-timed kick could send them flying as a useful diversionary tactic, impacting those behind them.
No one is immune to the danger of a gas bottle being telekinetically hurled towards them, especially when aimed at a stationary target after locking them in place with Mass Manipulation. In the event that all other strategies prove ineffective, consider taking control over a ghoul using Possession and making them move somewhere less conspicuous.

Difficulty Settings
In most action RPGs, you’ll find adjustable difficulty levels as a common aspect. We believe it’s important to highlight this feature since we aim to cater to the diverse tastes of our players when it comes to challenge level, and we do so by meticulously crafting these settings according to their preferences.
For those mainly focused on storyline and discovery, the Easy mode offers an enjoyable journey by reducing the challenge level of combat situations.
In this mode, the game aims for an optimal level of difficulty, encouraging players to strategize by employing various tactics such as stealth, physical combat, special abilities, and resource management with elixirs, in order to emerge victorious.
If you’re looking for a tougher test, the Hard mode offers a robust vampire encounter that requires full command over all your abilities and tactical know-how.
