The World Needs Reese Witherspoon and Kate Winslet to Patch Things Up

It’s clear that there are many issues arising in our universe currently, and while I can’t fix most of them, I believe there’s one small step I can suggest: Reese Witherspoon and Kate Winslet should reconcile. This might help bring a bit of harmony back into the cosmic order.

In a recent interview with People magazine, Reese Witherspoon and her co-star Will Ferrell from the show “You’re Cordially Invited” had a good laugh. During their chat, Witherspoon shared an embarrassing story that she can’t seem to shake off. She recounted an incident where a fellow actress, whom she wasn’t close with but was known for her serious and proper demeanor, asked her to present an award. Thinking it was a roast, Witherspoon made some jokes about laser-hair removal which turned out to be inappropriate as the event was formal and classy. The actress in question wasn’t named, but Witherspoon mentioned they aren’t friends anymore and she doesn’t communicate with her.

Who might this actress be, who seems to hold a grudge and was recently unmasked? Thank goodness for the internet. Just minutes after the interview was shared, Just Jared managed to solve the puzzle. The site stumbled upon a speech Witherspoon delivered in honor of Kate Winslet at the 2007 BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards, an event covered by Glamour magazine at the time. As reported by the fan site (described as “the ultimate Reese Witherspoon fan experience since 2001”), Witherspoon recalled the day Winslet first visited her after moving to the neighborhood. In Witherspoon’s account (and, according to the fan site, with a British accent), Winslet said something along the lines of, “Dear one, Sam is away filming, and I think our children are around the same age. Could they possibly play together? Oh, by the way, it’s almost 9 o’clock and I’ve had nothing to drink, do you have any wine?” Witherspoon praised her friend’s “boldness” in films like Iris and Holy Smoke, while acknowledging that she couldn’t share more tales because “they’re too risqué or scandalous or tipsy.” According to the fan site, this included a story about laser-hair removal. Bingo! (However, it should be noted: Winslet’s team has not verified any of this information.)

This event was a celebration hosted by the LA chapter of BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). Here, Winslet received the Britannia Award, honoring her as British Artist of the Year. Indeed, quite an honor! And the Brits have a certain traditional elegance about them.

However, this is puzzling: By early 2007, they were at a point where they exchanged cheek kisses on the Golden Globes red carpet, as per Just Jared. Now, it seems they’ve stopped communicating altogether! Winslet had every reason to be upset with her friend for humiliating her in front of such a prestigious circle. But this silence has lasted for so many years? Given that they’d already experienced countless boisterous, scandalous, and tipsy moments together?

Contemplate all the delightful buddy comedies we’ve been deprived of over the past two decades: Kate appearing in a passable film version of a Reese’s Book Club selection, and perhaps even humiliating Reese on a stuffy American awards stage! Instead, it seems these two rarely interact, and I can’t help but feel that the world is poorer for it. Although global harmony might be beyond reach, I hold onto the hope of reconciliation between these legends. Perhaps they can resolve their differences in time to co-present at the Oscars?
