The popular reality show “Married at First Sight” is changing channels. Following a bidding war, the series has secured a new broadcast platform at Peacock, where it will be available to stream for the next three seasons – seasons 19, 20, and 21.
As a passionate cinephile, I first stumbled upon “Married at First Sight” back in 2014 on FYI, with subsequent seasons also gracing A&E’s screens. Fast forward to 2017, and it found a new home on Lifetime, starting from Season 5. Since then, over 200 episodes have been broadcast, giving birth to numerous spin-offs such as “Married at First Sight: Honeymoon Island,” “Married at First Sight: Happily Ever After,” “Married at First Sight: Couples’ Cam,” and “Married at First Sight: Unmatchables.” Currently, there are about 30 international adaptations of this reality TV series, with Season 18 airing on Lifetime every Tuesday.
This reality series focuses on singles aiming to find their soulmate. They are paired up by relationship specialists, and for the first time, they meet at the altar where they exchange vows. Following their wedding ceremony, they spend their first night as a married couple, then set off on a honeymoon with other newlywed pairs. Over the course of eight weeks, they explore their relationship, and ultimately, they must choose whether to remain married or go through a divorce.
North Road’s subsidiary, Kinetic Content, is renowned for producing hit unscripted shows such as “Love Is Blind” on Netflix, “The Ultimatum” also on Netflix, and ABC’s “Claim to Fame.” Since its debut, “Married at First Sight” has consistently been Lifetime’s top-rated series, outperforming any other show on the channel by over 50%.
In 2023, Kinetic CEO Chris Coelen shared with EbMaster that they never underestimate the chance to create their shows. He believes this mindset contributes significantly to their success. The process is challenging and labor-intensive, but he’s confident that the narrative quality of their productions stands tall against any series, be it scripted or unscripted. He takes great pride in the shows they produce.
I’ve been quite impressed lately with Peacock’s streak of success in the realm of unscripted programming. Shows like “The Traitors,” “Love Island USA,” and “Paris & Nicole: The Encore” have really caught my attention and left a lasting impression.
