‘The Monster of Florence’ Teaser: Stefano Sollima’s Netflix Series Delves Into Italy’s Unsolved Sex Murders (EXCLUSIVE)

The initial, spine-tingling trailer for Netflix’s “The Monster of Florence,” produced by Italian horror master Stefano Sollima, has been revealed. In an exclusive with EbMaster, Netflix has debuted the first glimpse into the eagerly awaited serial killer series, which centers on a series of murders with sexual overtones that occurred outside Florence from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to shed light on Sollima, renowned for his gripping work such as “Gomorrah” and movies like “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Without Remorse.” What intrigues me particularly is his extensive exploration into a chilling, unsolved mystery known as “The Monster,” a nickname given to an alleged serial killer who orchestrated eight double murders in secluded spots around Florence. This enigmatic figure, referred to as “Il Mostro” in Italian, always employed the same deadly weapon, a 22 caliber Beretta.

This unsolved mystery stands as one of the longest-running investigations into the grisliest series of murders ever recorded in Italian history.

In a statement to EbMaster, Sollima referred to ‘The Monster of Florence’ as not just an unresolved legal case, but also a lingering enigma that shapes our experiences with suffering, dread, and quietness. He described the slain couples and the heinous acts committed against young women, still unexplained, as a festering wound that has been open for far too long. The tale of this elusive figure, who has never vanished, continues to haunt us.

The four-part miniseries, primarily filmed on location, brings together Sollima once again with writer Leonardo Fasoli and renowned Italian cinematographer Paolo Carnera – individuals whom Sollima collaborated with during “Gomorrah” and the cocaine trafficking series, “ZeroZeroZero.

Netflix has not yet confirmed an exact release date for “The Monster of Florence,” but it’s slated to premiere worldwide in Fall 2025. This series was developed by Fasoli and Sollima and produced by The Apartment and Sollima’s own production company, AlterEgo. Both these companies fall under the umbrella of Fremantle, the show’s owners. Lorenzo Mieli, Sollima, and Gina Gardini are the producers for this project.
