Previously, Liam Payne filmed a reality competition series titled “Building the Band” for Netflix during the summer, acting as a guest judge alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland. However, following Payne’s unfortunate death due to a fall in Argentina on October 16, 2024, the future of the show was unclear until January 30 when Netflix announced they would proceed with its release. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s VP of nonfiction series and sports, Brandon Riegg, disclosed that discussions between Netflix and Payne’s family were ongoing regarding the appropriate way to address his death within the show. Vulture has sought a comment from Netflix on this matter.
Under AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys as the host, Building the Band is a unique music competition where contestants form their own band without ever meeting each other until their first live performance. This show appears to be similar to a blend of “Love Is Blind” and “X-Factor”. As of now, there’s no confirmed premiere date, but Netflix has scheduled it for release in 2025.
