Will Smith is stepping into the Matrix.
Smith and hip-hop artist Big Sean have teamed up to produce the song “Beautiful Scars,” which also includes OBanga, accompanied by a music video reminiscent of “The Matrix.” The actor has further revealed plans to unveil his new solo album titled “Based on True Story” – marking his first full-length album release in over two decades. This upcoming album is expected to hit the shelves in March 2025.
OmArr and LeXoskeleton’s song titled ‘Beautiful Scars’ delves into the struggles of fame and lessons drawn from past errors. The accompanying music video features Smith as Neo, a character popularized by Keanu Reeves in the 1999 sci-fi movie ‘The Matrix’, and Big Sean as Morpheus, a role previously played by Laurence Fishburne.”
Or more casually:
“In their song ‘Beautiful Scars’, OmArr and LeXoskeleton talk about the challenges of fame and learning from mistakes. The video for this track has Smith playing Neo, like Keanu Reeves did in ‘The Matrix’, while Big Sean takes on Morpheus’s role, originally played by Laurence Fishburne.
At the start of this month, Smith shared a mysterious post on Instagram, reflecting on the opportunity he declined to play Neo (a role that eventually went to Reeves) in “The Matrix.
In 1997, the Wachowskis extended an offer to Will Smith for the role of Neo in “The Matrix”. However, he declined this opportunity and instead opted for “Wild Wild West”, thinking it was more suitable for him at that moment. This leads us to wonder, how different would “The Matrix” have been with Will Smith as Neo?
The video then ends with the text: “Wake up, Will. The matrix has you.”
In the year 2019, Smith shared a video on his YouTube channel detailing why he declined the opportunity to play Neo in “The Matrix.” He disclosed that the Wachowskis’ presentation for the movie failed to captivate him, causing his disinterest in the production. As per Smith, the Wachowski siblings focused more on selling the filmmaking technique than the storyline of “The Matrix.” In essence, they proposed a concept where, during an action scene, a character could seemingly freeze mid-air, and viewers would be able to see the entire jump from all angles due to innovative camera work.
