Chris Evans Denies Returning to Marvel for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and Says ‘That’s Not True’ and ‘I’m Happily Retired’

In a collaboration spanning five years for Marvel films, Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans portrayed Sam Wilson/Falcon and Steve Rogers/Captain America respectively. Their on-screen bond saw Steve passing the Captain America shield to Sam in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”. This pivotal moment unfolds fully in the upcoming Marvel production, “Captain America: Brave New World”, where Mackie takes center stage as the title hero. With Evans announced for a return to Marvel in 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday”, it leaves us wondering what Mackie thinks about this unexpected development?

Mackie admitted to Esquire magazine that he wasn’t aware of the project at the time. He had a conversation with Chris a few weeks prior, and during that chat, it wasn’t mentioned. When he inquired if Chris was planning to return for the movie, Chris replied that he was contentedly retired.

He went on explaining, ‘That’s where I picked it up.’ His supervisor demonstrated it to him. The manager said casually, ‘It seems Chris is returning then.’ That’s the extent of my knowledge as I haven’t received any script details yet.

Nevertheless, Evans clarified to Esquire during their Mackie feature that he has disagreed with the rumor about his return in the upcoming “Avengers” film. Although he last played Captain America in “Endgame”, it’s worth noting that he made a surprise appearance as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in “Deadpool & Wolverine” the previous year. This character was the same one he portrayed in 2005’s “Fantastic Four” and its sequel, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”.

Evans clarified that the report stating his return to Marvel isn’t accurate. He explained that such rumors have been recurring, particularly after ‘Endgame’. In fact, he has grown accustomed to ignoring them. To set the record straight, he is contentedly enjoying his retirement.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to admit that it’s tempting to speculate (just consider Andrew Garfield’s surprise appearance in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” after months of denial) but for now, Sebastian Stan is vehemently denying any involvement in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday.” The film is being helmed by the Russo Brothers and will introduce Robert Downey Jr. as the menacing Doctor Doom within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anthony Mackie, undoubtedly, is set to grace the next “Avengers” installments as the MCU’s fresh Captain America.

Mackie made it clear that he doesn’t want a repeat of “Infinity War” and “Endgame 2”. The Russos, being intelligent and well-versed in this universe and its history as well as the comic books, must have an original plan. It’s hard to imagine how they can gather so many characters on screen and make it coherent.

Regarding Mackie’s tenure as Captain America, the actor stated that he envisions it lasting around ten years, breaking it down as follows: “There are the two Avengers films, another potential Captain America movie, and then some occasional appearances like Spider-Man or Fantastic Four. However, I’m not certain about that. I don’t want to play a 60-year-old Captain America.

The movie ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will be released in cinemas on February 14, by Disney and Marvel. For a comprehensive read on Anthony Mackie, visit the full cover story on Esquire’s website.
