Sunrise Films has obtained the distribution rights for “In Camera,” a British film marking the directorial debut of Naqqash Khalid, after lead actor Nabhaan Rizwan was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award. This agreement, made with Together Films, plans for a release on April 15th.
In this movie, we find Rizwan portraying Aden, a budding actor who’s subjected to endless grueling auditions, which seem more like nightmares. Fed up with constant rejections, he chooses to carve his own destiny. BAFTA award-winning Amir El-Masry (“2021”) is also part of the ensemble cast in this drama that’s known for its innovative form and tackles the issue of bias within the film industry, as well as societal hypocrisy, using a struggling British Asian actor’s journey as a lens.
In Guy Lodge’s review for EbMaster, he noted that self-reflexive satirical films like ‘In Camera’ are seldom seen in the British independent film scene, possibly due to the immense challenges of financing and producing movies. He praised the movie as a bold debut, commending its fearless and darkly humorous portrayal of an industry where people of color are often treated as interchangeable tokens to meet quotas, and where authenticity is so commercialized that it turns into imitative postures.
In this production, Mary Burke of Public Dreams (a BAFTA-winning producer) and Juliette Larthe from Prettybird U.K., collaborated for the first time under Prettybird’s British division. This project received financial backing from BBC Film and the BFI, with funding from the National Lottery, as well as additional support from Uncommon Creative Studio.
The movie enjoyed a remarkable tour through various film festivals such as Karlovy Vary, Zurich, London, Thessaloniki, Stockholm, and Goa.
The agreement regarding the distribution was finalized by Andrew Nerger, head of U.S. and international distribution at Sunrise Films, and Jess Reilly, the international sales and acquisitions manager at Together Films.
Reilly stated, ‘In Camera’ is an exceptional first work that resonates with the trials and tenacity of artists worldwide. The unique narrative voice of Naqqash Khalid and the captivating portrayal by Nabhaan Rizwan elevate it to a must-watch title.
Moreover, Nerger stated, “Naqqash and Nabhaan possess remarkable abilities and are poised for great success. It’s a pleasure to present this exceptional display of emerging British talent to viewers in North America.
The purchase expands Sunrise Films’ collection of independent movies, featuring the BIFA-nominated film “Hoard” by Luna Carmoon and the queer romantic comedy “Bonus Track,” which had its premiere at the London Film Festival.
