GeForce RTX 50-Series GPUs Launched Today, But It’s Not Easy To Grab One

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement today, January 30, as Nvidia unveiled its latest GeForce RTX 50-Series GPUs! The much-anticipated RTX 5090 and 5080 were up for grabs this morning at retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg. However, it wasn’t long before these powerful cards vanished as quickly as they appeared. Fret not though, keep an eye on the links below, as I suspect there might be intermittent restocking throughout the day. The RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti are set to hit the market in February, but the exact release date remains under wraps for now.

The main model, the RTX 5090, retails at $2,000 and Nvidia asserts it’s twice as potent as the RTX 4090. However, it needs a 1,000-watt power source, a significant increase from the RTX 4090’s starting power consumption of 450W. Surprisingly, despite its high power requirements, the RTX 5090 is more space-efficient than its predecessor, accommodating in smaller PC constructions.

All cards in the lineup boast a slimmer size and improved performance, according to Nvidia. The RTX 5080, priced at $1,000, is reportedly twice as fast as its predecessor, the RTX 4080. On the other hand, the budget-friendly RTX 5070 offers comparable performance to the more expensive RTX 4090, but at a significantly lower price point of $550. The 5070 Ti, positioned in the middle, costs $750 and delivers performance that falls between the 5070 and 5080.

Instead of solely relying on raw processing power, the new 50-Series graphics cards utilize Nvidia’s advanced machine learning technologies such as RTX Neural Shaders and the latest Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) version 4. This technology enables upscaling of lower resolution gameplay to 1440p or 4K resolutions, but it also offers Multi Frame Generation which Nvidia claims can produce up to three additional frames from every one frame of rendered gameplay. Essentially, DLSS 4 functions like frame smoothing for movies and TVs, enhancing the visual experience by creating a more seamless, higher frame rate appearance without actually rendering all the frames.

In essence, even though the 50-Series GPUs may not show a significant boost in raw processing power when used without AI technology (for example, the 5070 has less power than the 4090), this makes them smaller and more budget-friendly compared to their previous versions. This is because they don’t require as much raw horsepower to deliver high-end results.

Absolutely, AI upscaling and frame generation offer alternatives to traditional hardware rendering, but they come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. While these machine learning technologies can deliver performance on par with hardware, the challenge lies in the quality of that performance. For instance, upscalers like NVIDIA’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR, and Sony’s PSSR for PS5 Pro may not always provide consistent results, or in some extreme cases, may be incorrect. On the other hand, frame generation can introduce noticeable input delay, which is counterproductive considering high-frame-rate gaming aims to reduce, not increase, such delays.

It’s important to note that Nvidia, along with game developers, have identified these problems and are actively striving to find solutions. In fact, many games currently leverage these features effectively. The new 40-series cards employed Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) to deliver significant performance improvements over the 30-series, albeit at a high cost. If the upcoming technology in the 5090 functions as planned, it could lead to another substantial performance increase. On the other hand, mid-range RTX 50 GPUs might provide an economical choice for gamers seeking 4K resolution and high FPS gameplay.

The upcoming RTX 50-Series laptop graphics processors are set to be released starting from March.
