On Wednesday evening, an American Airlines plane and a U.S Army helicopter had a fatal collision during landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington D.C. This unfortunate incident has prompted extensive news coverage across various outlets such as AP, CNN, New York Times, ABC, and others.
As reported by AP, American Airlines flight 5342 encountered an unexpected incident while approaching Reagan National Airport around 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The aircraft was roughly 400 feet up in the sky when it experienced a sudden drop in altitude. There were no initial indications of injuries. According to American Airlines, there were 60 passengers and four crew members aboard at the time of the accident. Currently, rescue operations are ongoing near the Potomac River in search of survivors.
The aircraft was steered towards Runway 33 by air traffic control, but tragically, it crashed shortly afterwards. Just before the accident, a controller contacted the Black Hawk helicopter, asking if they could see the incoming plane. Not long after, the controller instructed the helicopter to fly behind the plane, and soon after that, the collision happened.
