Vince Lawrence Is Proof That ‘Disco Demolition Night’ Didn’t Work

1979 saw a significant event unfold in Chicago, where radio DJ Steve Dahl incited thousands to bring disco records for destruction at a White Sox game, an action he described as simply “that Black stuff.” However, unbeknownst to these attendees, the event later came to be known as “Disco Demolition Night” marked the inception of a genre that would become more Black and gay: house music. Vince Lawrence, who was an usher at the game, reminisced about his goal of purchasing his first synthesizer from the earnings he made guiding people to their seats during this event. Just a few years later, Lawrence collaborated with Jesse Saunders to write “On & On,” considered the first house song. Elegance Bratton, director of the documentary “Move Ya Body: The Birth of House Music,” which spotlights Lawrence and other pioneers of house music’s early era, explained the reason for sharing this story, as the film premiered at Sundance in 2025.

This documentary, a joint effort by HiddenLight Productions led by Hillary Clinton (some jokingly remarking, “Hillary Clinton’s into houses?“), follows the inception of house music in Chicago, springing forth from the debris of Disco Demolition Night. “Our world often seeks to divide us,” Bratton commented. “But what I admire about house music is its exchange of cultures.” As Lawrence, a person who isn’t even gay, put it, “House music is the ultimate unifier. It doesn’t recognize race, sexual orientation, social status, or religion. It’s simply all about the rhythm and the acceptance that you can just be yourself, and that’s okay. House music belongs to the underestimated, the overlooked, the outcasts.
