PlayStation Leadership Shake-Up Sees New Sole CEO In Charge

Starting from April 1, 2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is moving away from the co-CEO system, with Hideaki Nishino being promoted to the sole position of CEO for SIE. During this time, Hermen Hulst will maintain his role as CEO of the Studio Business Group and report directly to Nishino.

In a press release, CFO Hiroki Totoki expressed enjoyment from working closely with Hermen and Nishino, as well as gaining understanding of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s dynamic and swift-moving industry. As they pass the responsibility to Nishino and his outstanding team, he is optimistic that Sony Interactive Entertainment will scale new peaks in the future.

Nishino and Hulst assumed the role of co-CEOs at Sony in 2024, succeeding departing CEO Jim Ryan. According to a statement made by Nishino, Sony intends to foster growth within the PlayStation community through strategies like expanding intellectual properties and driving technological advancements.

2024 presented a blend of successes and setbacks for Sony, with Helldivers 2 surprising as a hidden gem, whereas Concord failed to meet expectations. This dual outcome triggered significant internal adjustments, causing Sony to reconsider their initial strategy to introduce 12 live-service games by 2025. Instead, the planned number of games was reduced by half, leading to the termination of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer project and reportedly the cancellation of a God of War live-service spin-off as well.

2025 looks brighter for me as a Sony fan, with heavyweight titles like GTA 6, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Ghost of Yokei slated for release this year. On top of that, Sony is venturing into various media formats, with live-action adaptations of Horizon and Helldivers in the pipeline.
