‘The Hack’: David Tennant Phone-Hacking Drama Unveils First Look a Week After Prince Harry’s Historic Settlement

ITV has formally declared the launch of their 7-episode drama centered around the U.K.’s phone hacking scandal and probe, titled “The Hack” and penned by acclaimed multiple-award winner Jack Thorne.

A sneak peek at “The Hack” has been revealed, a film that was shot last year, happening only a week after the hacking scandal involving Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. tabloids escalated to an all-time high. News Group Newspapers recently made a groundbreaking apology to Prince Harry and agreed to pay significant compensation as part of this controversy.

I tried to maintain the same meaning while using simpler language and rephrasing some sentences for clarity.

David Tennant takes on the role of Nick Davies, a tenacious journalist who exposed phone-hacking at “News of the World.” Toby Jones portrays Alan Rusbridger, Davies’ former editor-in-chief at The Guardian, while Robert Carlyle plays Dave Cook, a former Met Police detective chief superintendent investigating the still-unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan. This drama unfolds alongside Cook’s investigation and Davies’ hacking expose.

A collaboration between ITV Studios and Stan Australia, the thriller series “The Hack” was ordered by ITV’s drama director Polly Hill. Directed by BAFTA winner Lewis Arnold (“Time,” “Sherwood,” “The Long Shadow”), it is overseen by executive producer Patrick Spence, a multiple award-winner at BAFTA and RTS (for “Mr Bates vs The Post Office”). As the managing director of AC Chapter One, he plays a key role. At present, the series is undergoing post-production.

Thorne additionally serves as an executive producer in collaboration with Joe Williams (“Mr Bates vs The Post Office”), while ITV Studios houses both Arnold and Tennant. Abi Bach, known for “The Honourable Woman” and “Black Earth Rising,” assumes the role of the series producer.

Thorne expressed that this particular event from our recent past is puzzling and misleading, with numerous intricacies. Initially, as someone passionate about politics, he believed he grasped every detail. However, he was proven wrong. This struggle for truth left him astonished. Given the current era where truth appears to be under greater threat than ever, he feels it’s crucial to narrate this tale. It is a privilege for him to collaborate with David, Robert, Toby, Lewis, Patrick, Joe, and Abi in bringing this story to life on screen. He hopes they can effectively portray the depth of what occurred and honor the outstanding journalism that lies beneath it.

Among the talented ensemble I’m fortunate to admire are Rose Leslie, Dougray Scott, Eve Myles, Adrian Lester, Katherine Kelly, Kevin Doyle, Neil Maskell, Lara Pulver, Lee Ingleby, Pip Torrens, Lisa McGrillis, Sean Pertwee, Robert Bathurst, Richard Pepple, Nadia Albina, Phil Davis, Ace Bhatti, Charlie Brooks, and Steve Pemberton. What a delight it is to see them all together on screen!
