The Dark Winds Cast Agrees with George R. R. Martin

Will the Emmys at last recognize the talent of this show in 2024? In a blog post, Dark Winds‘ producer George R. R. Martin expressed that it’s “overdue” for Zahn McClarnon to receive an Emmy award. Since Martin has shown courage in expressing his opinions, we can confidently assume he is genuinely supportive of this viewpoint. At Sundance 2025, when asked about Martin’s endorsement, the cast of the AMC series enthusiastically agreed, with some affirmative “yeahhh”s and applause. Jessica Matten told Vulture, “We all feel that,” while McClarnon smiled and said, “That would be amazing. I’d be grateful for the recognition.

Despite the significance of awards, other forms of recognition hold great value for the cast as well. The team behind the show, including native directors, producers, writers, and crew members, take pride in their work on Dark Winds. Matten finds it heartening when strangers approach cast members to discuss their feelings about the show. “It’s like an opportunity for different tribes to say hello, our family watches it, it means a lot,” she said. “It’s more than just recognition; it’s a chance to connect with another soul too. It’s very celebratory.”

Based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, Dark Winds is a psychological thriller that follows Navajo tribal police officers. McClarnon expresses his joy in seeing Native children represented on television and feels privileged to be part of this storytelling. “After 35 years in my career, it’s come full circle where we’re telling our own stories,” he said, emphasizing the importance of this representation.
