Matthew Perry Foundation Launches Addiction Medicine Fellowship at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital

On Tuesday, it was announced that the Matthew Perry Foundation, along with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, have established an addiction medicine training fellowship under Matthew Perry’s name and chosen their first fellow for this program.

As a residency-trained physician, I have the opportunity to be part of the esteemed Matthew Perry Foundation Fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). This fellowship enables me to delve into the realm of addiction treatment, with the ultimate goal of incorporating this knowledge into my future medical practice, aiming to offer comprehensive care for those battling addiction.

Dr. Sarah “SK” Kler has been chosen as the inaugural recipient of the upcoming fellowship, scheduled for the 2025-2026 academic year. At present, Dr. Kler serves as the Chief Medical Resident in Internal Medicine at MGH and will commence her fellowship training in June.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to be part of the MGH fellowship program, backed by the Health Resources and Services Administration. This program will see just three of us rotating through various departments and regional partners within the esteemed Mass General Brigham healthcare system – a system that proudly counts Massachusetts General Hospital among its founding members.

The Matthew Perry Foundation is delighted to collaborate with Massachusetts General Hospital’s Addiction Medicine Fellowship program. Matthew strongly advocated for erasing the shame associated with addiction, and we are proud to support this significant endeavor by associating our name with it,” stated Doug Chapin, chairman of the board, and Lisa Kasteler Calio, executive director, in a public announcement.

Established with the intention of honoring Matthew Perry’s commitment to assisting individuals battling addiction, the Matthew Perry Foundation came into being. Regrettably, the beloved character from “Friends,” Perry, passed away in October 2023 following a lethal ketamine overdose.

Dr. Sarah Wakeman, the program director, emphasized that keeping addiction treatment separate from regular medical care, and viewing it as solely a social issue rather than a medical one, will only intensify stigma, inequalities, and the fatal consequences of the ongoing epidemic. She underscored the need for the entire medical community to tackle substance use disorders with comprehensive, integrated solutions that span various healthcare settings. The MGH fellowship’s training will prepare future physicians to deliver and consistently enhance this essential care.

Mass General will join forces with the Matthew Perry Foundation in a tight partnership to spread knowledge, combat prejudice, and, above all, provide encouragement to individuals from all walks of life and circumstances who are battling substance abuse issues.
