As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I, Marie Ulven – better known as Girl in Red – am embarking on an exciting new journey. I’ve been given the incredible opportunity to take center stage in “Low Expectations,” my first-ever lead role in a feature film! This remarkable project is the debut feature from director Eivind Landsvik, under the esteemed production house Maipo Film.
Although “Low Expectations” marks Landsvik’s debut in full-length filmmaking, it has generated considerable excitement due to the acclaim earned by his previous work, the short film “Tits,” which won recognition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
A Struggling Artist’s Redemption” narrates the tale of Maja, a 29-year-old artist who, despite years of remarkable achievements, finds herself at a point of exhaustion. Compelled to pause her career, Maja goes back home, grappling with depression and financial troubles, and takes a job at a high school. The movie delves into her personal journey as she confronts the tough realities of ordinary life.
Maipo Film, along with Snowglobe (‘The Worst Person in the World’), is creating ‘Low Expectations’ in Denmark. This upcoming production seems set to delve deeply into themes of ambition, exhaustion, and the pursuit of joy.”
Or, more concisely:
“In Denmark, Maipo Film and Snowglobe are teaming up to create ‘Low Expectations’, a thought-provoking journey through ambition, burnout, and happiness.
Ulven isn’t encountering an entirely new tale, given that her journey to stardom commenced back in 2018 when she began composing music from her bedroom. Her breakout hit, “We Fell in Love in October,” has garnered more than 1.2 billion streams on Spotify. Debuting in 2021 was her first studio album titled “If I Could Make It Go Quiet,” which received widespread praise from critics. In 2023, she embarked on a tour with Taylor Swift, broadening her fan base, followed by the release of her second album entitled “I’m Doing It Again Baby!” in 2024.
The movie, funded by both the Norwegian and Danish film institutions, is set to be distributed by Nordisk Film Distribution. At present, it’s looking for extra financial backing. Director Landsvik was thrilled about collaborating with Ulven, saying, “I had known her as a talented musician, but was even more delighted to discover that Marie possesses an exceptional acting talent too. She brings so much to this film, and I am grateful she is willing to lend her abilities to our project.
Synnøve Hørsdal, the producer, expressed a similar thought: “There couldn’t be a better fit than Marie and Eivind for this project. Their blend of talent, experience, and storytelling abilities is truly remarkable. Marie’s personal connection to the film’s ideas, along with Eivind’s strong narrative skills, makes them stand out as exceptional figures in Norway’s cultural scene.
