The Prince Charles Cinema in London has expressed concern about potentially shutting down due to a dispute with its property owner regarding a renewed rental agreement.
The movie house shared a plea for aid on their social platforms to save an esteemed theater, admired by filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson. Within the initial hour, this appeal amassed more than 10,000 signatures.
The petition states that we are extremely disheartened, as Zedwell LSQ Ltd and their parent company Criterion Capital have insisted on adding a termination clause in our upcoming lease agreement. This provision could potentially render us homeless if they acquire planning permission to renovate the cinema, with just 6 months’ warning.
They explained: “If we were to lose the Prince Charles Cinema, it wouldn’t only mean the demise of a cherished cultural landmark, but also the loss of an economic driver for the West End. This venue attracts people from across London and its environs not just for movies, but also for shopping and dining. The impact would extend far beyond the physical structure itself.
The Telegraph reports that the Prince Charles is the sole autonomous cinema still running in London’s West End. This cinema is renowned for its distinctive film offerings, such as all-night movie marathons focusing on particular directors and franchises, as well as 70mm screenings of classic and international films.
The petition indicates that they believe Zedwell LSQ Ltd and their parent company Criterion Capital, with their considerable financial power, are intentionally ignoring our right to a new lease and attempting to force us out of the building when our current one ends in Sept 2025, through what seems like intimidation.
Criterion Capital hasn’t yet replied to EbMaster’s request for comment, but a representative informed The Telegraph that Bubble Chamber Limited has started the process of renewing their lease on Prince Charles Cinema. The landlord has followed the necessary steps according to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954.
