The Sundance Film Festival this year is taking place following the demise of David Lynch. His passing was made public on January 16th, just prior to his birthday, and approximately a week before many Hollywood figures headed for Park City. Consequently, it’s not surprising that he is often remembered during the festival. Chloë Sevigny shared with Vulture, “He was like a god.” What she admired most about Lynch, even more than his visual style and filmmaking, was how he portrayed female characters. This was something she always appreciated about him as a director, as he seemed genuinely intrigued by women and their inner worlds. Sevigny pointed out that this was rather uncommon among directors of Lynch’s generation, who may have shown less interest in women and their personal experiences.
At Sundance, Sevigny is involved with “Magic Farm,” a fresh sci-fi production helmed by Amalia Ulman. Notably, Ulman had an encounter with David Lynch, who exhibited an unusual warmth and thoughtfulness that she found appealing. She commented, “I was drawn to how he conducted himself, and how effortless it was to interact with him. It was quite inspiring because I’ve often encountered older artists of his age who weren’t as kind.” Lynch serves as a role model for being considerate on film sets. In his book, a blend of memoir and self-help titled “Catching the Big Fish, “, Lynch criticized directors who manipulate actors into Method acting performances. He wrote, “In both work and life, we’re meant to get along and enjoy ourselves. We should be like playful puppies, tails wagging. It’s supposed to be a wonderful experience; it’s supposed to be amazing.
