Bringing Sony/Xbox Games To All Consoles May Help Grow The Industry, Says Dev

At one stage, it seemed implausible that Xbox-only games such as Halo or Gears of War would migrate to PlayStation 5. However, the cross-platform strategy advocated by Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming CEO, could turn these speculations into facts. Now, Thomas Mahler – creative director of Moon Studios and director of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps – has voiced his support for Spencer’s approach, implying that it might be beneficial for the video game industry as a whole.

In his extensive discussion about X, Mahler proposed a shift in the competitive dynamic between Xbox and PlayStation consoles, suggesting that the hardware similarities and overlapping user bases have rendered their competition outdated. Instead, he advocates for making it more convenient for players to access their preferred games regardless of which console they choose, with Nintendo being an exception due to its unique position. Mahler further stated that it’s illogical to favor one large corporation over another in terms of console sales and suggested a more cooperative approach among companies, emphasizing the shared appreciation for video games.

At the moment, Spencer’s stance on platform neutrality hasn’t been embraced by Sony yet. However, Mahler hinted that Sony may be moving in that direction, as they have started to bring their exclusive games to PC platforms. This includes the upcoming port of Rise of the Ronin.

Mahler observed, “We wonder for how long Sony will continue restricting their software sales to a single platform. Given that they’re already offering some games on PC, it seems financial gains are driving this decision. For the time being, Xbox might not be a major concern due to its underwhelming sales, but if Xbox manages to create an impressive console again, Sony’s fortunes could shift. If their rival produces a superior machine for the next generation and gamers favor it over the next PlayStation, Sony’s exclusive-platform approach may become obsolete.

Here are some popular games from studios associated with Xbox, such as Indiana Jones: Circle of Destiny and Doom in Dark Ages, which have been confirmed for release on PlayStation 5. Additionally, Microsoft owns Activision, whose 2024’s top-selling game across all consoles in the US, Call of Duty: Black Ops VI, is also expected to be available on PlayStation 5. The anticipated launch of Nintendo Switch 2 could further stimulate industry growth this year, and Microsoft has already promised to offer support for the new console as well.
