In simpler terms, Ubisoft, the French video game company, is facing tough times and has recently announced it’s shutting down one studio and reducing staff at other studios. This move is part of a new cost-cutting strategy that will result in approximately 185 job losses. Ubisoft has also experienced several rounds of layoffs throughout the year 2024.
According to recent reports, Ubisoft has announced its decision to shut down Ubisoft Leamington, a studio that had previously collaborated on games like Star Wars Outlaws and Far Cry 5. Prior to being taken over by Ubisoft in 2017, this team was responsible for developing the DJ Hero series under Activision.
A representative for Ubisoft confirmed to TopMob that they will be shutting down Ubisoft Leamington as part of their ongoing strategy to focus on specific projects and cut expenses. Moreover, Ubisoft is implementing targeted changes in several studios including Ubisoft Dusseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm, and Ubisoft Reflections.
Regrettably, it appears that approximately 185 team members will be affected by this change. We want to express our sincere appreciation for the valuable work they’ve done, and we are resolute in providing assistance during this period of transition. – Ubisoft
It’s worth noting that the drastic measures announced by Ubisoft weren’t entirely surprising, given their statement to investors in early January about seeking methods to cut costs substantially within the company. Ubisoft mentioned they will adopt a careful approach when it comes to investments during this time. In essence, they anticipate achieving €200 million ($206 million USD) in cost savings as part of this strategy.
These events are unfolding while there are whispers that Ubisoft could be collaborating with Tencent on a business deal to secure their future. During a recent conference call, Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot mentioned that he perceives “multiple possible avenues” for the company and its brands in order to optimize shareholder value moving forward.
During the call, Ubisoft chose not to address rumors about the company being up for sale to Tencent. However, they did mention that they are considering various possibilities, and further details cannot be disclosed at this time.
Ubisoft is set to unveil their newest financial report on February 13. During this time, they might disclose extra insights regarding their upcoming business prospects. However, from January 29 until February 13, the company will be in a silent phase, meaning they won’t make any specific announcements about their future business plans during this period.
