Following the launch of Fantasian: Neo Dimension across PCs and consoles, the mastermind behind Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, is now immersed in another project as part of his farewell tour. This upcoming game, he envisions, will serve as a spiritual sequel to Final Fantasy 6. Contrary to initial expectations that Fantasian would mark the end of his game development journey, the seasoned producer shared that working on this game was an incredibly satisfying experience for him, and he couldn’t resist the allure of continuing to collaborate with the Fantasian team.
As I pondered over making “Fantasian: Neo Dimension” my swan song, the extraordinary team assembled for this project was such a delight to collaborate with that it became challenging to say goodbye, I confided in The Verge. But alas, humans are creatures of desire, aren’t we? Consequently, I find myself engrossed in a new venture alongside the same team that breathed life into Fantasian: Neo Dimension. This forthcoming project will bear a resemblance to my previous creations and aim to serve as a worthy successor to Final Fantasy 6. Our ambition is to craft something both nostalgic yet innovative – an ode to the past, yet modern in its execution. It shall serve as the second installment of my farewell symphony.
The last main game in the Final Fantasy series to be created with 2D graphics was Final Fantasy 6, as the franchise moved towards 3D graphics starting with Final Fantasy 7. This game is often praised for its complex game mechanics, diverse characters, and story-driven focus, making it one of the most acclaimed titles in the series. Over the years since its initial release, it has been adapted for various platforms. When asked about a possible remake similar to the recent updates on Final Fantasy 7, producer Yoshinori Kitase admitted that such a project would be quite difficult and could take approximately 20 years to complete.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled about the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and, well, I can’t help but think that the classic Final Fantasy 6 could be next in line for this amazing treatment. The producer, Masaaki Hayasaka, mentioned that Octopath Traveler, the first game to use the HD-2D style, was inspired by FF6 due to its top-notch pixel art. He’s intrigued about how our reference would shine with the HD-2D art style.
