Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer continues to express his views on the company’s strategy regarding releasing their first-party games on different platforms. For a while now, Spencer has been advocating that Xbox shines brightest and is most effectively positioned when it makes its own games available on other platforms. In the future, Spencer stated that keeping a game exclusive to Xbox forever is not a viable approach for them.
In a conversation with Destin Legarie, Spencer was explicitly questioned about whether Bethesda’s RPG Starfield would continue to be an exclusive console title for Xbox in the immediate future. Spencer responded negatively, stating simply, “No.
He stated: “I see no need to establish boundaries for any game and claim, ‘This game should not be taken to a location where it can attract players, where it could yield profitable business for us.’

Spencer mentioned that releasing Xbox games on various other platforms leads to improved business outcomes for the company, enabling Microsoft to fund the creation of the types of games they showcased during the January Xbox Developer Direct.
Our approach involves making our games accessible across various gaming consoles. Game Pass plays a crucial role in enjoying these games on our platform. However, we prefer not to restrict our games on other platforms, as it’s not a direction that aligns with our goals. This strategy doesn’t suit us.
Currently, we believe our actions help us create the premier global gaming platform. This is crucial because top-tier games are offered in various locations. Increasingly, developers are seeking ways to maintain connectivity as their games can be played in numerous places. We strive for Xbox to be the ultimate platform that facilitates this connection. Our distinct advantage lies in our ability to support creators across any screen where people choose to play.” – Spencer explained, emphasizing that most other platforms are limited to a single device or system (such as PC, mobile, or console).
Some Xbox enthusiasts have voiced apprehensions about this fresh approach, especially the possibility of it seeming like Microsoft is losing its distinct character. Spencer acknowledged these worries and stressed their importance. He stated that the identity of Xbox will keep changing, which has been a constant since the Xbox brand debuted in 2001.
Here comes an exciting update: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the highly anticipated Xbox title, will make its way to PS5 this coming spring. This follows its initial release on Xbox back in December. Soon after, Doom: The Dark Ages will drop simultaneously across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms, in May. As for Starfield, it debuted in September 2023 and has remained exclusive to consoles like Xbox (it’s playable on both console and PC).
