Over the weekend of January 24th to 26th, the South Korean box office was dominated by the horror movie “Dark Nuns.” This chilling new release made quite an impact, leading the way in ticket sales. Meanwhile, the action sequel “Hitman 2” also put up a strong fight with its debut performance.
The horror movie titled “Dark Nuns” debuted at number one, raking in approximately KRW5.71 billion ($3.9 million) during its opening weekend. It attracted 588,498 viewers and accounted for 42.8% of the market share. To date, it has grossed around $4 million, taking into account the earnings from previews as well.
In the second place for the weekend box office, the action-comedy sequel “Hitman 2” earned $2.8 million and held a market share of approximately 30.3%, attracting around 425,198 moviegoers. The film’s total earnings since its release, including midweek previews, now amount to an impressive $3.9 million.
In the past few weeks, “Harbin,” a historical thriller focusing on Korean independence fighters, has slipped from its number one spot to third place. Over the weekend, it generated $495,464 in ticket sales, bringing its total earnings up to $30.9 million after 72,827 admissions.
In the box office, “Pokémon the Movie AG: Mew and the Wave Hero Lucario” made its entrance in fourth position, earning approximately $285,445 from a total of 45,984 ticket sales. Its overall earnings now stand at $397,778.
5th on the list, the documentary “IU Concert: The Winning” brought in a total of $542,261 from ticket sales to 28,063 viewers. Previously climbing in rankings, “The Substance” fell to 6th place, earning $177,292. With this latest addition, the film’s overall earnings now reach $2 million with a total of 302,870 admissions.
Moving forward, the supernatural comedy “Ghost Police” premiered in seventh place, raking in $117,412. Meanwhile, “Pororo the Movie: Great Adventure Under the Sea” slipped to eighth and made $92,129.
In the top 10 list, “Crayon Shin Chan’s Dinosaur Diary Movie” and “The Firefighters” were the two films that made it, with earnings of $70,164 and $69,127 respectively. To date, they have accumulated a total of $5 million for Crayon Shin Chan’s movie and an impressive $25.1 million for The Firefighters.
Based on data from Kobis, the tracking service run by the Korean Film Council, it’s shown that the top ten movies collectively earned around $8.6 million. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the previous week’s earnings of about $5 million, indicating a robust comeback in box office performance.
As the Lunar New Year festivities kick off, the Korean box office is buzzing with fresh releases like never before, particularly “Dark Nuns” which has captured everyone’s attention, signaling an energetic start to the new month of February.
