A recent study indicates that National Hockey League (NHL) players tend to spend their leisure time playing video games and consuming cannabis edibles more often, rather than the heavy drinking that was common among previous players’ generations.
22-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies shared with The Athletic that due to rapid technological advancements, it has become quite simple to spend one’s life in a digital realm rather than the physical world. Buffalo Sabres forward Peyton Krebs, aged 23, noted that while they may dine out together, players often return to their rooms afterward to engage in video games.
One unnamed defenseman shared with the site that playing video games together with teammates can foster camaraderie. In other words, they explained, it requires being more open and inviting others out of their comfort zones to play games with them.
It seems that professional NHL players are increasingly opting for cannabis edibles instead of alcohol during their leisure time. The Athletic conducted interviews with over three dozen current NHL players and found that about 38% admitted to consuming edibles during the season. Traditionally, hockey players have been known for their heavy drinking habits, but this trend might be shifting. Florida Panthers defenseman Nate Schmidt shared that when he joined the league a decade ago, he was told “If you can’t play while hungover in this league, then you don’t belong in it.
It appears that younger athletes are shifting their perspectives, particularly when it comes to their approach to practice. Schmidt emphasized that subpar attendance at practice is not tolerated; they should always be fully committed, giving 100%. It seems that excessive drinking during the season, once common, is diminishing. Instead, players now seem more focused on moderation and taking better care of their physical health.
An experienced NHL player, preferring to stay unnamed, expressed his regret over the absence of camaraderie-building through social drinking. “In my early days, we’d often go for drinks the evening before matches,” he reminisced. “I believe the league was more enjoyable in its past.
In numerous cities throughout North America where NHL teams compete, cannabis is not prohibited for the players, as it’s legally permitted in those areas.
Speaking about EA’s NHL video game franchise, the most recent title, NHL 25, has just received an upgrade featuring the 4 Nations Face-Off expansion, which is inspired by the actual international tournament.
