2025 saw an exhilarating announcement during the Xbox Developer_Direct stream – I’m talking about a brand new installment in a beloved series! This time, it’s Team Ninja, renowned for NiOh, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and Rise of the Ronin, teaming up with PlatinumGames (the masterminds behind Bayonetta) to create none other than Ninja Gaiden 4. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!
You can see the first trailer for the fourth main installment of this action game series below.
I can hardly contain my excitement as a fan! This autumn, I’ll be diving into the action-packed world of Ninja Gaiden 4 on my PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC. What’s more, if you’re subscribed to PC/Xbox Game Pass, you can enjoy it right from day one!
Old and new protagonist
In the sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3, which was launched by Team Ninja over a decade ago, players will delve into the grim and transformed version of Tokyo’s cityscapes. The story follows a new character, Yakumo, who takes on the lead role. Characters like Dark Dragon and Ryu Hayabusa, well-recognized figures among fans, will significantly impact the plot as Yakumo confronts them. It is also worth mentioning that Ryu is expected to be a playable character in Ninja Gaiden 4.
According to game director Yuji Nakao from PlatinumGames, he spoke about the switch in our main character like this:
“Yuji Nakao, director at PlatinumGames, shared his thoughts on the new lead character.”
Or more casually:
“Game boss man Yuji Nakao (PlatinumGames) spilled the beans on the change of our hero.
To keep the series fresh and appealing for both newcomers and loyal fans, we’ve introduced a new hero into the narrative. However, we didn’t want to neglect our long-standing supporters, so Ryu Hayabusa features prominently in the storyline. He serves as a formidable obstacle and growth opportunity for Yakumo.
In this game update, developers have incorporated new mechanisms for character navigation within the map, which makes use of rails and ensures a steady flow of excitement and suspense throughout the gameplay. As for the battle system, it has been carefully balanced to prevent players from feeling overly powerful against enemies, while also avoiding situations where fights seem excessively unfair.
In this game, enemies have been crafted to excel in defensive strategies and relentless attacks, yet players don’t feel they’re at a significant disadvantage. There’s a sense of equilibrium that’s been maintained across the series, outlasting contemporary gaming fads – as stated by Yuji Nakao.
As a devoted admirer, I eagerly anticipate the pivotal role that Yakumo’s Bloodraven Form will play in our impending battle. When summoned, this technique transforms my character into a formidable force, capable of delivering a decisive blow that swiftly decimates numerous foes. In essence, it serves as an “instant game-changer,” tipping the scales of battle significantly in our favor.
Cooperation with PlatinumGames
It’s rather surprising that Team Ninja and PlatinumGames are joining forces, considering they each specialize in creating engaging action games. However, their unique design approaches make this collaboration particularly strong. In the upcoming game Ninja Gaiden 4, they will integrate features that suit each team best.
In our work at PlatinumGames, we prioritize creating dynamic, impactful attacks and immersive moment-by-moment experiences. However, the Ninja Gaiden series is renowned for its finely tuned gameplay that provides a gratifying feel, resulting in an exceptionally well-crafted overall action experience. Collaborating on this project was a rare and enlightening learning experience for us at PlatinumGames.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Remaster
The unexpected addition unveiled during the Xbox Developer Direct was none other than Ninja Gaiden 2: Black. This is a modernized version of the classic second chapter in the series, built with Unreal Engine 5. As of yesterday, it’s playable on XSX/S consoles and PC, and for those who subscribe to Game Pass as well. You can find its trailer linked below.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Fumihiko Yasuda, the mastermind behind Team Ninja studio, openly acknowledged that they crafted the remaster of the second installment with us fans in focus. They wanted to ensure we had an engaging activity to indulge in while eagerly anticipating the arrival of Ninja Gaiden 4. Notably, this remaster is one of the standout titles in the series, making it an excellent option for both veterans and newcomers alike who wish to dive into the thrilling world of Ninja Gaiden.
