Today, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket for mobile devices unveiled details about their upcoming digital card collection, Space-Time Smackdown, including its release date and a sneak peek at some cards included in the set. Additionally, they announced when trading functionality will be added to the game, as shown in a 52-second trailer that also revealed the name and launch date of this new set.
Pokémon TCG Pocket reveals the next set of digital trading cards, plus details on trading
There seems to be some inconsistency regarding the release dates. As suggested in the announcement trailer, the new packs are planned for release on January 29th, whereas trading is slated for the 28th. However, a press release from The Pokémon Company International states that the new set will be launched on January 30th, and trading will be accessible from the 29th instead.
As an avid Pokémon TCG Pocket fan, I’m thrilled to share that next week, on January 30th, 2025, we’re getting our hands on the Space-Time Smackdown expansion! This fresh set seems heavily inspired by the Diamond and Pearl Pokémon games, as seen in the striking cover art featuring legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia.
The announcement trailer has given us a sneak peek at some iconic Pokémon from that region, such as the Diamond and Pearl starter trio, Lucario, Gible (the fierce creature that evolves into Garchomp), and none other than Sinnoh’s legendary champion, Cynthia, who’s making a return with a new supporter card. Can’t wait to add these cards to my collection!
In this upcoming set, you’ll find more than 140 fresh cards and a novel category called “Pokémon Tools” cards. At present, we don’t have much information about these tools, but they resemble the existing cards in the physical game. A sneak peek at a new card, Pachirisu EX, hints that this may be the case. Pachirisu’s attack suggests that if it has a Pokémon Tool attached, it deals 40 extra points of damage. This implies that, similar to the physical game, Pokémon Tools might be cards that Pokémon can utilize directly.
Players should brace themselves for another week before they can begin unwrapping these fresh packs. However, here’s some good news: The eagerly anticipated trading feature is scheduled to launch a day earlier – on January 28th. Last week, we disclosed the mechanics behind trading, and the response was somewhat subdued due to certain limitations. It turns out that players can only swap cards of up to a 1 Star rarity, which means that many of the game’s scarcest cards will still be exclusive finds within more packs.
As per a statement from The Pokémon Company International, it seems that trading may necessitate a unique kind of sand timer (one among several types of in-game currencies used by TCG Pocket), and additionally, trade tokens will be required for trading. At this point, the specifics of how these new items function are still unclear. This announcement also disclosed a third limitation to trading: currently, players cannot trade cards from the latest announced set. However, this may change in the future, but for now, players can only trade cards from the two sets that have already been released.
