Director Robert Eggers, known for “Nosferatu”, is confirmed to pen and direct the follow-up to Jim Henson’s beloved 1986 fantasy film “Labyrinth” for TriStar Pictures, as reported by EbMaster.
Eggers and his writing partner Sjón are handling the project’s composition, while Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus serve as producers, alongside Lisa Henson. Brian Henson holds the position of executive producer in this project.
Initially, Scott Derrickson was slated to direct the follow-up film. However, when asked about the project’s progress with TriStar Pictures and Jim Henson Pictures in 2023, Derrickson himself acknowledged it as a challenging task and subsequently left the production. The script was originally assigned to Maggie Levin, and it was referred to as a sequel during that period.
Under the direction of Jim Henson, the initial “Labyrinth” featured David Bowie as the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as a young girl on a mission to rescue her baby brother, accompanied by an array of Henson puppets in a whimsical musical adventure. This production underperformed at the cinema, but it gained a passionate following through home video releases and television broadcasts, eventually earning the status of a cherished cult film. It spawned spin-offs such as novels, comic books, video games, special screenings, and a fan-organized masquerade ball.
The filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed “Nosferatu,” which earned four Oscar nominations, will once again collaborate with Focus Features for the chilling horror film titled “Werwulf.” Set in the 13th century, this werewolf-themed movie is slated for release in December 2026.
Eggers recently mentioned to Indiewire that aside from his current projects, he’s also keen on directing a Western film and a medieval-themed one titled “The Knight.
The news of Eggers’ involvement was first reported by the InSneider newsletter.
