I can’t help but feel baffled as a fan, seeing Denis Villeneuve overlooked yet again in the Best Director race for his “Dune” masterpiece. Just like last year with the first installment, the Oscars have missed the mark by not nominating him for “Dune: Part Two”. It’s hard to comprehend given that the original film garnered a impressive 10 Oscar nods, while the sequel fell short this year with only 5 nominations.
I wanted to extend my congratulations on the ‘Dune’ best picture nomination, to Greig Fraser for his exceptional cinematography, for the visual effects team for their outstanding work, and to Patrice [Vermett] for his remarkable production design. Additionally, I want to recognize the sound team for their excellent contribution.
It seems that Denis Villeneuve didn’t receive a nomination, which has led me to joke about quitting acting. To be honest, this system often doesn’t make sense to me. But Joe Walker and Denis, you truly deserve it. ‘Dune’ is an exceptional film, even surpassing the first one in my opinion. The individuals receiving recognition are certainly deserving of their accolades. I am proud to have been a part of this incredible project. My congratulations go out to everyone.
Other filmmakers in the industry also responded to Villeneuve’s snubs. Chris Miller, the producer of “Spider-Verse”, posted on Twitter: “There were numerous films with exceptional directing this year, but what Denis achieved – in every aspect of the craft – was truly remarkable.”
The directors in other film industries also commented on Villeneuve’s snubs. Chris Miller from “Spider-Verse” team tweeted: “There were plenty of films with excellent direction this year, but Denis’ mastery across all aspects of the craft was truly exceptional.
Actor Brolin, known for playing Gurney Halleck in both “Dune” movies, has consistently advocated for the Academy to recognize Villeneuve’s work as director of the franchise. Last year, he stated to EbMaster that he would retire from acting if the Oscars failed to acknowledge Villeneuve a second time.
Brolin stated, “If he’s not nominated this year, I’m done with acting. I found that movie superior to the first one. Watching it felt like my mind was shattered open. It’s incredibly well-made, and Denis is among our most skilled filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any significance at all, they should honor him.
Following Villeneuve being overlooked for the initial “Dune” film, Brolin notably vented his disapproval of the Academy’s choice by posting a video on Instagram.
At one point, Brolin expressed his frustration saying, ‘I can’t understand how a book as extraordinary as this could receive 10 nominations and yet its creator isn’t among them.’ It’s baffling, on the one hand, to witness such greatness, and then, on the other, feel utterly disillusioned by the absurdity of it all. So, I offer my sincere congratulations to those who have been recognized for their outstanding achievements in this field, because, despite its brilliance, the whole thing still seems incredibly foolish.
Director Villeneuve could potentially receive a third opportunity for an Academy Award nomination in the Best Director category, this time for “Dune Messiah,” the final chapter of the “Dune” series. Previously, he was recognized with a nomination for “Arrival.
