Astro Bot ‘almost outdid Nintendo at its own game’, Reggie Fils-Aimé admitted at New York Game Awards 2025

At the 2025 New York Game Awards, Astro Bot emerged victorious yet again, claiming the top award in its category for Team Asobi’s PS5 platformer. Not only that, but it also received a total of four nominations at the event, which was hosted by Reggie Fils-Aimé – a former executive at Nintendo of America.

Astro Bot with another victory

On January 21st, 2025, at the New York Game Awards, Astro Bot was not only named Game of the Year but also received accolades for Best Music in a Game and Best Game for Kids. Reggie Fils-Aimé remarked:

[In this version, I have rephrased the original sentence to make it more conversational and easier to read. The main idea remains the same.]

So I have to admit it, Astro Bot almost outdid Nintendo at its own game.

Absolutely, I couldn’t disagree more either. In my opinion, Astro Bot is simply fantastic – it’s brimming with emotion and meticulously crafted details that make it feel like a tribute to PlayStation’s legacy and the art of gaming. What makes it even more impressive is how the DualSense controller on the PlayStation 5 enhances the experience, making you feel immersed in the game. It’s been said that Mario platformers have dominated their genre for years, with few contenders. However, I believe Astro Bot has certainly given them a run for their money!

At the Game of the Year Awards in December 2024, it was director Nicolas Doucet from Team Asobi who graciously acknowledged Nintendo and the Mario games in their acceptance speech. This act of kindness has certainly left a lasting impression on me.

It came as a shock to many that this small game was named Game of the Year 2024, but that’s one of the reasons I adore this industry – it continues to catch us off guard. While most developers are busy creating massive, costly titles and online games seem to be fading away, Astro Bot managed to grab everyone’s attention. It demonstrates that we still crave outstanding games, free of unnecessary frills, but brimming with content. We definitely need more polished and innovative single player experiences like this one.
